Long Beach State’s pitching staff struck out eight, but big hits from the Buckeyes led Ohio State to the win.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State lost via run rule for the first time in 2025, as No. 23 Ohio State used a pair of big innings to win 8-0 in five innings on Wednesday at the LBSU Softball Complex.
Long Beach State (18-13) used three pitchers who combined for eight strikeouts, matching a season-high while only giving up nine hits while making five of their own, but Ohio State (30-7-1) had two double plays to help snuff out Beach opportunities while capitalizing on their own.
Erykia Gonzales picked up a key strikeout to end the top of the first with two on to end the top of the first, and Long Beach State threatened in the bottom half, as Lina Apodaca worked a leadoff walk. An error put runners on the corners with one out, but the Beach did not push a run across and the Buckeyes scored in the top of the second. Two singles and a hit batter loaded the bases for the Buckeyes, and Gonzales then walked in a pair of runs, ending her day. Brynne Nally entered in relief, and Jasmyn Burns singled to score two more before an inning ending strikeout to make the score 4-0.
Nally struck out four more batters over the next two innings, setting down the Buckeyes in order in the third and fourth innings. Apodaca doubled with one out in the third, but a double play got Ohoi State out of the inning and another double play snuffed out a leadoff single from Brooklyn Lee in the fourth.
Ohio State hit back-to-back home runs to start the fifth, and an error extended the frame as the Buckeyes pushed to an 8-0 lead. Long Beach State once again loaded the bases, but ultimately finished the game leaving seven stranded as Layna Gehard finished off the complete game win for Ohio State in five innings.
The Beach will remain at home, hosting a key rivalry series this weekend as Cal State Fullerton comes to the LBSU Softball Complex. The teams will play a doubleheader starting Saturday at 1 p.m. and a final game on Sunday also at 1 p.m., with all three games broadcast live on ESPN+.
