Titans Trip Up Long Beach State

4/5/2025 7:21:00 PM | Softball

Cal State Fullerton took both games after holding on for a tight game one win in Saturday’s doubleheader.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton won a seesaw battle in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader with Long Beach State Softball, and used that momentum to take the second game as the Beach dropped both games starting the series.

Long Beach State (18-15, 8-6 Big West) struck first in the opening game. The Beach drew two walks against Cal State Fullerton (23-14, 9-5 Big West) starter Eva Hurtado in the first inning but didn't convert those into runs, but  were able to capitalize in the second. A leadoff walk and a single from Avery Weisbrook put two on, and then three straight walks plated a pair of runs as the Beach took a 2-0 lead. The Titans answered straight back. Two bunt singles led to a pair of runs after an overthrow trying to cut down a run at the plate as the score got square at 2-2.

The Beach pushed back in front in the bottom of the fifth inning. Makayla Medellin worked a one-out walk, and after a hit batter, an error loaded the bases in front of Priscilla Iniguez. The freshman delivered a hard hit ground ball to the left side that scored a pair, putting the Beach in front 4-2.

The Titans again had an answer. Using small ball again, The Titans put two on in front of Nataly Lozano who doubled to left to tie the game, and then an RBI single from Sarah Coccillos gave Cal State Fullerton their first lead.

The Beach had a leadoff triple from Selena Perez in the bottom of the sixth, but were unable to push the run home, and then despite two more errors from Titans shortstop Sarah Perez, the shortstop made a key play when it mattered, cutting down the tying run at the plate and a strikeout to finish the game from Trisha McCleskey gave Cal State Fullerton a 5-4 win in the opener.

After snaring the win in game one, Cal State Fullerton was in complete control in the second game. Leanna Garcia limited Long Beach State to just one hit, while big innings in the second, third and fifth led the Titans to an 11-0 run rule victory.

The series concludes with a third and final game on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
