Long Beach State overcame a 5-1 deficit to clinch its third straight series
Elgin Bennett tripled off the left field on the second Jake Fields pitch of the game. Fields hit Evan Cloyd to give Cal State Bakersfield runners on the corners. Nick Mascaro hit into a 4-6 fielder's choice to score Bennett. CSUB executed the hit-and-run perfectly as Cody Hendriks' single through the right side sent Mascaro to third. Brock Perreira walked to load the bases.
Fields struck out Elijah Pelayo on a 2-2 count. In his fourth at-bat of the season, Matt Dobson hit a liner through the right side on a 3-2 Fields fastball to score two runs. Dobson stole second with the count 2-2 to Lewis Barnum V. Barnum V ran the count to 3-2 before Fields struck him out with a breaking ball.
Kyle Ashworth led off the LBSU first with an opposite-field single to left. With one out, Ashworth stole second on the first Shane McAlinden pitch to Alex Champagne. Champagne grounded out to second as Ashworth took third. Connor Charpiot hit a grounder to Dobson at third. His throw was high, which allowed Ashworth to score. Hendriks, the right fielder, picked up the ball and threw it to Barnum V, who was back at first for the third out.
Tyler Gebb relieved Fields and hit Kanoa Morisaki with a 0-2 fastball to begin the top of the second. Cloyd hit a one-out two-run home run to left center to extend the Roadrunners' lead to 5-1.
Luke Taylor worked out a one-out walk against McAlinden. Trotter Enright doubled to the rightfield fence, allowing Taylor to come around and score. Enright took third on the throw home. Conner Stewart followed with a sac fly to left to plate Enright.
Van Larson entered for the Dirtbags and hit Perrerira to begin the third. Larson got Pelayo to fly out to center before he was relieved by Roblez. Roblez struck out Dobson. Barnum V flew out to Ashworth in the right to end the frame.
Ashworth led off the bottom of the third with a double to right field. Nathan Cadena's opposite-field hit just got over the head of Barnum V for a single, advancing Ashworth to third. Champagne's safety squeeze bunt attempt was deep enough to score Ashworth and get Cadena to second. Charpiot fouled out. Reid Montgomery struck out to end the inning.
McAlinden hit Stewart with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Easton Elliot dropped a bunt down the third base line for a single. McAlinden hit Ashworth to load the bases. CSUB went to the bullpen as Jack Leary relieved McAlinden. Cadena flew out to a diving Bennett in left for the third out.
Enright singled to right center with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Riley hit Stewart in the batting helmet with his first pitch. Elliot lined into a 6-3 double play to keep the score 5-4.
Ashworth led off the bottom of the seventh with his third hit of the night, a single up the middle. Ashworth attempted to steal with a 1-0 count on Cadena but was thrown out by Morisaki. Cadena singled to center on the ensuing pitch. Leary hit Champagne with a 3-2 pitch. Charpiot singled to left to drive in Cadena to make it 5-5. Montgomery flew out deep enough to right field to allow Champagne to head to third.
With the left handed hitting Matt Toomey coming up to bat, the Roadrunners went to lefty Dante Jackson out of the bullpen. LBSU countered with right handed hitting Justin Roulston. Jackson won the battle as Roulston hit a grounder back to the pitcher's mound, which Jackson threw onto first for the final out.
Enright opened the seventh with his third hit, an opposite-field single to left. Bennett misplayed the ball, allowing Enright to reach second on an error. Stewart attempted to sacrifice Enright. Morisaki, the catcher, fielded the ball and attempted to throw out Enright at third, but the Dirtbags' shortstop slid under the tag.
Elliot grounded into a 4-6 fielder's choice, which allowed Enright to score the go-ahead run. Ashworth grounded out to Morisaki in front of the plate as Elliot took second. Jeter Scheurman relieved Jackson to face Cadena. The senior's opposite-field single through the right side scored Elliot.
Roblez, who retired the first 12 he faced in relief last Saturday at Hawai'i, reset his career-high with 12 strikeouts in 6.2 innings. He threw 84 pitches, 62 for strikes. Ashworth, Cadena, and Enright combined for nine of the 11 Long Beach State hits (three each). The Dirtbags' pitching staff limited the Roadrunners to four hits for the second night in a row.
Long Beach State (14-18, 8-9 Big West) clinched its third consecutive Big West baseball series Saturday. The Dirtbags look for the sweep against Cal State Bakersfield (13-23, 6-8 Big West) Sunday at 1 p.m.
