The Roadrunners overcame a 6-0 LBSU lead to take the win
LONG BEACH, Calif.—Cal State Bakersfield defeated Long Beach State 12-6 Sunday afternoon at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
Cal State Bakersfield (14-23, 7-8 Big West) starter Jacob Gutierrez retired the first seven Dirtbags' batters before Conner Stewart singled to right center with one out in the bottom of the third. Easton Elliot doubled down the right-field line to advance Stewart to third. Kyle Ashworth grounded out to second, which allowed Stewart to score. Nathan Cadena singled up the middle to plate Elliot for the second LBSU run.
Owen Geiss retired six Roadrunners in a row before Elgin Bennett doubled to left with one out in the fourth. With the count 2-1 to Noah Alvarez, Geiss picked off Bennett from second for his second pick off of the game. Alvarez worked out a walk to bring up Tyler Leroy with two outs. Leroy singled through the left side. With runners on first and second, Elijah Pelayo fouled out to Connor Charpiot, who made a nice over-the-head catch down the right-field foul territory to end the inning.
Alex Champagne walked to begin the bottom of the fourth. He stole second and went to third on Gutierrez's failed pickoff attempt to second. Charpiot's sac fly to left center drove in Champagne for a 3-0 score. Gutierrez hit Matt Toomey. Trotter Enright tripled to the rightfield corner to drive in Toomey. Gutierrez walked Reid Montgomery to give the Dirtbags runners on the corners.
With Stewart coming to bat, Kanoa Morisaki, who caught Saturday's game, came on in relief. Stewart's flair to right got down in time for Enright to come home. Elliot grounded into a fielder's choice to second for the second out. As a result, Long Beach State had runners on the corners for Ashworth, who singled to center to drive in Montgomery. Morisaki struck out Cadena to get out of the inning.
Geiss hit Matt Dobson on a 3-2 count to open the top of the fifth. After striking out Tyrese Johnson, Geiss hit pinch-hitter Ryan Ruch. Nick Mascaro attempted to bunt for a base hit, but Cadena, the third baseman, threw him out at first. Both runners moved up a base on the play. Evan Cloyd doubled to left to drive in both runners.
Tyler Gebb relieved Geiss. His 2-1 pitch to Bennett went to the backstop, advancing Cloyd to third. Bennett walked. Alvarez walked to load the bases. Leroy's opposite-field single down the right-field line drove in two runs. The Dirtbags called in Ka'imi Kahalekai to replace Gebb and face Pelayo. A double steal with the count 1-2 resulted in the fifth CSUB run. Pelayo walked. Dobson hit a grounder to Cadena at third.
He reached on an infield single, but Cadena's throw got away, allowing the tying run to score. Charpiot, the first baseman, attempted to throw out Cadena, trying to advance to second. His throw was wide, and the second error on the play allowed the Roadrunners to take the lead, 7-6. Johnson walked to bring Ruch up for the second time in the inning. He struck out for the third out.

CJ Brown, the third CSUB pitcher of the game, hit Stewart with one out in the bottom of the sixth. With back-to-back LBSU lefthanded batters coming up, the Roadrunners went to lefty Dante Jackson out of the bullpen. Elliot singled to center as Stewart took second. Ashworth flew out to right, allowing Stewart to head to third. CSUB returned to the bullpen for their closer, righty Michael Riley, as the righthanded Cadena came up. Cadena flew out to center to end the Long Beach State threat.
Pelayo's bunt single began at the top of the seventh. He stole second. Dobson attempted to put down a sac bunt. Banda fielded the ball and threw to third to get Pelayo for the first out. Pinch-hitter Cody Hendriks walked on four pitches. Louis Zulaicia, who entered the game as a defensive replacement in the sixth, batted for the first time and singled through the left side for an RBI.
An error on the play allowed Zulaicia to go to second as Hendriks headed to third. Mascaro attempted a bunt. Cadena fielded the ball at third and threw to first for the out and an 11-6 Cal State Bakersfield lead. Alex Ramos relieved Banda. His first batter was Cloyd, who popped out first to end the frame.
The Roadrunners added a run in the top of the ninth on Brock Perreria's pinch-hit double to cap off the scoring.
Elliot, Toomey, and Stewart each posted two hits for the Dirtbags. Leroy charted three hits to pace the 'Runners.
Long Beach State (14-19, 8-10 Big West) travels to Cal State Fullerton (17-18, 9-6 Big West) next week for a three-game series that begins on Thursday. The first pitch is at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
