Women’s Water Polo Defeats Cal State Fullerton For Second Conference Win

Eleven players added to the scoresheet with Martina Cardona leading the offense with a hat trick.

FULLERTON, Calif.- Martina Cardona's hat trick and Chelsea Oliver season-high of 12 saves led No. 6 Long Beach State to their fourth straight win as they defeated Cal State Fullerton, 18-5 in Big West play.
 
Long Beach State (10-8, 2-0 Big West) held the Titans (9-13, 0-2 Big West) scoreless for the first eight minutes with Martina Cardona getting on the board first followed by Jamie Oberman. A late goal by Rita Gurri Capel closed the quarter with LBSU leading 3-0.
 
Cardona added her second of the game early in the second quarter, but the Titans answered back quickly to cut the lead to 4-1 with 5:52 left. Gaby Patenaude and Ellie Goren got on the scoresheet extending the Beach lead. Fullerton shortened the gap to 6-2 but Long Beach State answered back with a 3-0 run with goals from Gurri Capel followed by Patenaude second goal in the quarter and Chiara Amoroso beating the goalie with seven seconds left as the Beach head into halftime up 9-2.
 
The Beach scored three unanswered goals to open the third period with Elisa Portillo and Zelma Koka adding their first goal of the game and Cardona completing her hat trick. The Titans added one, but Jermonie Billingly answered right after as the Beach led 13-3 with 4:19 left. Grace Cuozzo gave the Beach an 11-goal lead after scoring on a powerplay. Chelsea Oliver denied back-to-back shots by CSUF to close the quarter as Long Beach State led after three, 14-3.
 
Back-to-back goals by Amanda Price with under one minute of play in the fourth extended the Beach lead to 16-3. The Titans answered with two of their own. Amoroso and Cuozzo both added late goals as the Beach earned their second conference win of the season, 18-5.
 
The Beach is back at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center Tuesday night to host Bucknell. First sprint against the Bison is scheduled for 7 p.m. with live stats provided through thefosh.net.
