Women’s Water Polo Starts Big Week Hosting Bucknell Tuesday Night; Travels To Hawai’i Saturday

The Beach looks to extend their winning streak against the Bison.

LONG BEACH, Calif.No. 6 Long Beach State starts an important week hosting Bucknell at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center on Tuesday night. The Beach comes from a four-game winning streak and looks to extend that against the Bison. After the match up against Bucknell, Long Beach State will head to Hawai'i to face the 2024 Big West Champions on the road in conference play. 
 
Long Beach State (10-8, 2-0 Big West) won both of their past two games as they dominated St. Francis at home, 23-2 and earned their second conference win after defeating Cal State Fullerton, 18-5 on the road. Junior Elisa Portillo added five goals against the Red Flash and joined the program's top 10 in goals scored passing the 150 milestone. Ellie Goren added a career-high of four goals to help the Beach secure the win. Senior Chelsea Oliver had a season-high of 12 saves in the match up against the Titans. Martina Cardona continues to lead the Beach on offense with 46 goals, ranking fourth in conference while Portillo ranks sixth with 42. 
 
Bucknell (9-4, 2-3 CWPA) played three tough match ups against ranked opponents last week. The Bison dropped contests against No. 12 Princeton, 19-5, No. 9 Harvard, 18-4 and No. 20 Brown, 13-10. Bucknell opens their California trip facing the Beach before playing Concordia and heading to the Aztec Invite hosted by San Diego State. Freshman attacker Olivia Hopper leads the team with 13 goals in conference play while goalkeeper Tamara Torkos posted 29 saves at CWPA games. 
 
Hawai'i (12-3, 2-0 Big West) started Big West play with two straight conference wins after defeating No. 18 UC Santa Barbara 15-7 and CSUN 14-9. The 'Bows took down No. 5 UCLA 8-5 for the first time since 2011 at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational semifinal and currently rank third in the nation. French Olympian Ema Vernoux leads the team with 50 goals in her first year, ranking third in Big West. Senior Bernadette Doyle has 31 goals on the year and adds a team-high of 20 assists to help UH in the season. In the cage, Daisy Logtens has 113 saves.
