
Apodaca, Barnett Claim Big West Weekly Honors

The sophomore pitcher threw two complete games while Apodaca hit .500 as the team’s leadoff hitter in a sweep of UC Davis.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Following a road sweep of UC Davis, Sophomore Kate Barnett and Lina Apodaca were both recognized by the conference as Barnett was named the Big West Pitcher of the Week and Apodaca was the Big West Freshman of the Week, announced March 31.
Moving to the leadoff spot in the order, freshman Lina Apodaca responded with a massive weekend in Davis, hitting safely in all three games and finishing the weekend with a .500 batting average and a .538 on-base percentage. Her best game came in the finale, where Apodaca went 4-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI to help finish off the third win of the weekend.
Kate Barnett threw every pitch of the final two games of the series in a pair of complete games, picking up two wins and lowering her league-leading ERA to 1.51 in the process, 19th in the nation. Barnett allowed just one run in a game two win, striking out three and then followed that with another victory to close the series, giving up three hits. Over the weekend, Barnett walked just two batters and struck out five, showcasing her control that has her as one of the nation's leaders in walks per seven innings.
Long Beach State has now had four different players recognized by the Big West. Freshman pitcher Brynne Nally was named the Big West Freshman of the Week after the first week of the year following an outstanding debut, and Shannon Haddad was the Big West Pitcher of the Week following a pair of complete game performances at the Louisville Slugger Invitational.
After two weeks on the road, Long Beach State returns to the LBSU Softball Complex for a huge week, hosting Ohio State in a midweek contest before hosting Cal State Fullerton in a rivalry series Saturday and Sunday.
