LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State combined their trademark aggressive offense along with some solid pitching to close out Cal State Bakersfield 9-3 in their first game of Big West play.

Long Beach State (13-9, 1-0 Big West) behind Isabella Alonso set down Cal State Bakersfield (2-20, 0-1 Big West) in order in the top of the first inning and then quickly went to work in the bottom half.

Lina Apodaca opened the game with a double, and then came home to score on a base hit from Priscilla Iniguez singled to plate the first run, and then after a hit batter, a base hit from Emily Dowden scored one more. An error added a third and left runners on the corners, which the Beach quickly took advantage of on a double steal to make the score 4-0 after the first.

Cal State Bakersfield made their push in the third. Three singles loaded the bases, and while the Beach got the first out of the inning at the plate on a groundout, a wild throw to try and complete the double play allowed the first Runner run to score. Another single and an RBI groundout added two more, but the Beach held on to the lead through the inning.

That would be key as the Beach bats went back to work. Nina Sepulveda singled followed by an Emily Dowden walk, and both then came home to score on a double from Miranda Gonzalez to make the score 6-3.

Jailynn Banda entered in the circle for the Beach and controlled the rest of the game, striking out five and allowing just one hit in four scoreless innings as the Beach continued to extend the lead.

RBIs from Iniguez and Sepulveda added two more in the fourth, and Iniguez scored herself in the sixth inning after starting the inning with a single on a Bakersfield error to lead to the final 9-3 margin.
