Beach Runs Past UC Davis In Big West Championship Rematch

Long Beach State won a second straight elimination game to advance to Friday.
FULLERTON, Calif. – Aggressive early play paid off for Long Beach State, as softball earned a measure of revenge at the Big West Championship on Thursday, knocking out UC Davis in an elimination game to continue their run in Fullerton.
Long Beach State (31-21) scored first to kick off the elimination game. Lina Apodaca started the game with her 20th double of the season, and after a single put runners on the corners, a sacrifice fly opened the scoring at 1-0. With Weisbrook on second, a flare from Brooklyn Lee put runners on the corners, where the Beach went aggressive and it paid off.
A suicide squeeze by Nina Sepulveda scored Weisbrook and Lee took third, a key base as a second sacrifice fly in the inning scored the junior as the Beach took a 3-0 lead.
After the early runs, both defenses took over. Ashley Sawai struck out five batters over four scoreless innings through the fifth, while Kate Barnett and Isabella Alonso combined to stifle the UC Davis (29-25) bats.
Priscilla Iniguez smashed a home run to left, her team-leading sixth of the season to spark more life for Long Beach State in the sixth. With the momentum, Lee and Sepulveda followed with back-to-back hits, and after getting moved into scoring position, scored on a two-RBI knock from pinch hitter Elissa Guerrero.
UC Davis pulled back a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Barnett finished off the win as the Beach found key plays when they needed them throughout the game.
The win allows Long Beach State to continue to advance through the elimination bracket at the Big West Championship after an opening game loss. The Beach will start their day Friday with a 4 p.m. contest against UC Santa Barbara on ESPN+, with another game to follow for the winner at 7 p.m.
