Women’s Water Polo Edges UC San Diego, 13-11

Chelsea Oliver recorded a season-high of 13 saves and Jermonie Billigsly led the offense with four goals.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 6 Long Beach State earned their fourth conference win after edging No. 10 UC San Diego, 13-11 at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center. Senior Chelsea Oliver had a season-high of 13 saves while Jermonie Billingsly added a team-high of four goals to lead the Beach in the afternoon.
Long Beach State (13-9, 4-1 Big West) started off the game strong opening a quick 3-0 lead after goals from Daniela Quinzada Gonzalez, Elisa Portillo and Chiara Amoroso. UC San Diego (13-12, 2-2 Big West) closed the gap with back-to-back goals before Jermonie Billingsly, Martina Cardona and Portillo added one each to extend the lead to 6-2 with 2:29 left in the first. The Tritons added one on the powerplay to closed the first with LBSU leading 6-3.
A quick goal by Billingsly got things started for the Beach on the second quarter. UCSD answered back with two quick goals before LBSU got two of their own to lead 9-5 with 1:41 left. The Tritons added one more to head into half trailing the Beach, 9-6.
Billingsly got the Beach up by four after a powerplay goal while Oliver kept the Tritons scoreless for most of the third. A late goal by UCSD closed the third with the Beach up 10-7.
The Tritons scored one with 5:12 left in the fourth to close the gap. Cardona and Ellie Goren extended the Beach lead to 11-8. UCSD fought back but the Beach kept control of the game after Quinzada Gonzalez scored a backhand goal, 13-10. A late penalty shot goal by the Tritons closed the game as Long Beach State earned their fourth conference win, 13-11.
