Women’s Water Polo Closes Home Schedule With A Pair Of Games

Spanish duo of Martina Cardona and Elisa Portillo combine for over 100 goals in the year for the Beach.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 6 Long Beach State will host their two final home games of the 2025 regular season this weekend at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center. On Saturday the Beach will host No. 10 UC San Diego for a key Big West match up and then will face No. 1 Stanford on Sunday. 

Long Beach State (12-9, 3-1 Big West) showed an impressive defense last week defeating CSUN, 16-2 at home. Senior Martina Cardona led the offense with a hat trick and five other players added a pair of goals each. Chiara Amoroso had a team-high of five steals and Chelsea Oliver added nine saves. Cardona continues to lead the team in the season with 56 goals followed by junior Elisa Portillo with 53. Senior Jamie Oberman leads the team in assists with 30 as well as adding 22 goals in the year. 

UC San Diego (13-11, 2-1 Big West) faced Cal State Fullerton on Friday night earning their second conference win, 14-8. After the game against the Titans, the Tritons split a pair of games with East Coast teams. UCSD dropped a close game against No. 9 Harvard, 13-11 and edged No. 14 Michigan, 13-12. Senior Caroline Christl leads the Triton offense with 67 goals in the season while Courtney Okumura has a team-high of 30 assists. On defense, Lexi Stahl and Bria Zwaschka split time in the cage combining over 150 saves. 

Stanford (15-0, 2-0 MPSF) is the team to be beaten in the season as they are undefeated and leading the rankings for the past month. The Cardinal have five Olympians in the roster with American duo Jenna Flynn and Ryann Neushul leading the team on offense with 37 and 35 goals, respectively. After defeating No. 9 Harvard, 16-5 and No. 17 San Jose State, 20-4, Neushul hit the milestone of 200 career goals. The Cardinal defense is led by Christine Carpenter in the cage collecting 79 saves so far in the year. Stanford faces No 2 USC for MPSF play before facing the Beach.
