Lina Hits Two Home Runs As Dirtbags Defeat UCSB 9-6

Charpiot goes 3-for-4, Ashworth 2-for-4 with two RBI
LONG BEACH, Calif.--Dylan Lina hit two home runs as Long Beach State defeated UC Santa Barbara 9-6 Friday night at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field to open a three-game Big West series.
Lina's one-out opposite-field home run to right field in the bottom of the second broke the seal for the Dirtbags.
Matt Toomey doubled to lead off the bottom of the third. Alex Chapagne's sac bunt advanced Toomey to third. Kyle Ashworth singled up the middle to up the Long Beach State advantage to 2-0. Nathan Cadena singled up the middle with an aggressive Ashworth going to third. Armando Briseno drove Ashworth home with a single up the middle for a 3-0 score.
With two outs, the Dirtbags attempted a double steal. Cadena and Briseno were successful. The throw-down by UCSB catcher Nate Vargas ended up in center field, allowing Cadena to score. Connor Charpiot's second double scored Briseno, making it 5-0. Vargas began the Gauchos' fourth with a home run. The Dirtbags got the run back in the bottom of the inning on Ashworth's two-out opposite-field double to left that scored Champagne.
With one out in the top of the fifth, Lina walked. Charpiot's third hit of the game, a single through the right side, pushed Lina to second. A wild pitch let both runners move up a base. Trotter Enright walked to load the bases. Raymond Olivas, the third pitcher of the game for UC Santa Barbara, entered. Conner Stewart's squeeze bunt resulted in a sacrifice and Lina scoring. Toomey was hit by a pitch for the second time, loading the bases again. Champagne was hit by a pitch to plate Charpiot.
The Gauchos put two runners on base in the second, third innings, and fifth innings, but Kellan Montgomery, the LBSU starter, was able to work his way out of trouble each time. He recorded strikeouts twice.
With two runners on the sixth, Montgomery was relieved by Tyler Gebb, who got a grounder to short for the second out. Gebb hit Xavier Esquer to load the bases. Letrey McCollum walked to allow UCSB's second run to come in. Jack Holman hit a shot to the warning track in right that Ashworth tracked down for the final out.
Lina hit his second home run of the night, a two-out blast to left center in the bottom of the sixth. The Gauchos loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the eighth. Joey Iglesias relieved Cristien Banda to face Esquer, who hit a grand slam home run to left center on the first pitch. With one out, Albert Roblez replaced Iglesias. Roblez walked Holman. Roblez struck out Jonathan Mendez looking to pick up the second out. Vargas struck out to end the frame.
Champagne led off the bottom of the eighth with a double to right. A Frank Camarillo pitch hit Ashworth. Camarillo entered the game to begin the inning and struck out Cardena looking. Briseno hit into a 5-4-3 double play to send the game to the ninth.
Roblez hit Jeremiah Crain to begin the top of the ninth. With pinch-runner Nolan Farley at first, Cole Kosciusko struck out on a 2-2 Roblez breaking ball. Reiss Calvin hit a grounder back to Roblez, who threw onto first for the second out. Farley moved to second as Corey Nunez came to bat. Nunez worked out a walk to bring Esquer to the plate as the tying run. The UCSB leadoff hitter struck out swinging for the final out of the game.
Lina was 2-for-3 with three runs scored in addition to his home runs. Charpiot was 3-for-4, and Ashworth went 2-for-4 with two RBI Vargas was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Montgomery improved to 5-2 on the year as he tossed the first 5.1 innings, striking out five. Roblez earned his second save, striking out four in 1.2 innings of hitless relief.
Long Beach State (9-15, 3-7 Big West) and UC Santa Barbara (16-8, 4-6 Big West) return to action Saturday night. The action on ESPN+ begins at 6 p.m.
