Gauchos pitchers limit LBSU to three hits
LONG BEACH, Calif.—UC Santa Barbara defeated Long Beach State 9-0 Saturday night in Big West baseball action at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
Jake Fields tossed a 1-2-3 first for the Dirtbags before Jonathan Mendez led off the second with a double. Nate Vargas' to right froze Mendez in between second and third. The ball got down for a double as Mendez could only reach third. Fields struck out Jeremiah Crain, looking to bring up Cole Kosciusko. Fields hit Kosciusko with a 2-2 pitch to load the bases. Fields got the ground ball he was looking for as Reiss Calvin hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.
Corey Nunez's double began the UCSB third. Jack Holman singled through the right side to drive in Nunez. Xavier Esquer's blooper to right sent Holman to third. LeTrey McCollum's double to the left-center gap scored Holman, pushing Esquer to third. Mendez's opposite-field single to right scored two runs. Ka'imi Kahalekai relieved Fields and quickly retired the next three Gauchos to get the Dirtbags out of the inning.
UC Santa Barbara starter Calvin Proskey retired the first nine Dirtbags he faced, getting seven consecutive fly ball outs to begin the game. The next two outs came via Proskey's strikeouts. Kyle Ashworth's double to rightfield gave the Dirtbags their first base runner. Proskey struck out the next two LBSU batters to raise his total to six. Kahalekai did not give up a hit over his first 3.2 innings of work until a two-out Calvin home run in the top of the sixth.
Mendez's single to center opened the top of the eighth. Vargas singled through the left side to give the Gauchos runners on the corners. With one out, Kosciusko doubled to the left field wall for a run. Van Larson came on in relief for the Dirtbags. With the infield in, he got Calvin to hit a ground ball to second for the second out. Nunez walked to load the bases. Holman popped out to short for the third out. The Gauchos added three runs in the top of the ninth.
Mendez led UCSB as he was 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs. Vargas and Kosciusko both added two hits. Prosky limited LBSU to two hits and struck out eight during his seven-inning stint. Donovann Jackson pitched the eighth while Elliot Gallegos pitched the ninth. The trio allowed three Long Beach State hits, struck out 10, and walked one.
Long Beach State (9-16, 3-8 Big West) and UC Santa Barbara (17-8, 5-6 Big West) conclude the series Sunday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
