Women’s Water Polo Shuts Down CSUN, 16-2

The Beach held the Matadors scoreless for two quarters.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 6 Long Beach State showed an impressive defensive game to hold No. 23 CSUN to two goals this Saturday at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center, winning their third conference win, 16-2.
Martina Cardona opened the score for Long Beach State (12-9, 3-1 Big West) with under 30 seconds of play. The Beach kept the momentum to open a large lead after eight minutes, 6-0, after back-to-back goals by Jermonie Billingsly.
Chelsea Oliver held the Matadors offense with another quarter shutting down while Cardona added her second of the day to extend the Beach lead 7-0 at halftime.
CSUN (15-10, 0-4 Big West) scored their first of the game but a 4-0 run for the Beach kept the game under control after back-to-back goals by freshman Rita Gurri Capel, 11-1 after three quarters.
The Matadors fired one in the back of the net early in the fourth while the Beach closed the game with a 5-0 run defeating CSUN 16-2.
Cardona led the offense with a hat trick while Billingsly, Gurri Capel, Gaby Patenaude, Elisa Portillo, Jamie Oberman each added a pair of goals. Chiara Amoroso had a team-high of five steals and Chelsea Oliver collected nine saves.
The Beach will remain at home hosting a pair of matches next weekend to close the home schedule. On Saturday March 29 they will face No. 11 UC San Diego and the following day No. 1 Stanford. First sprint against the Tritons is scheduled for Noon with live stats provided through thefosh.net.
