Ten-Inning Thriller Goes CSUN’s Way To Close Series With The Beach

3/22/2025 4:27:00 PM | Softball

Both of Long Beach State’s losses in Northridge came in extra innings.

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Playing in their second marathon game in as many days, CSUN once again found the edge in extra innings, defeating Long Beach State 5-4 in the series finale Saturday in 10 innings.

CSUN (13-15, 6-2 Big West) was able to push two runs across in the first inning. Makayla Carman started the bottom of the first inning with a single, and after another bloop single, a walk loaded the bases for the Matadors with no outs. A pair of sacrifice flies then scored a pair as the Beach fell behind 2-0.

Long Beach State (15-12, 5-4 Big West) finally pushed into the lead in the fourth inning. Brooklyn Lee and Corissa Sweet hit back-to-back singles to start the inning, and freshman Priscilla Iniguez doubled into the gap, scoring both to even the score at 2-2. A flare into shallow center from Savannah Magadan then dropped, allowing Iniguez to score and giving Long Beach State a 3-2 lead.

The Matadors answered back in the bottom of the sixth. Cowans, who had been excellent through four innings of relief, hit the leadoff batter from CSUN, and then an overthrow on the relay after a single from Galindo led to a ton of action on the basepaths, as the Beach cut down the lead runner at the plate but the Matadors advanced Galindo to third base. That run would then come down to score as Jerzie Liana doubled down the line to tie the game at 3-3.

Shannon Haddad would enter for Long Beach State, picking up two critical outs with runners on the corners to keep the score tied heading into the seventh. After a quick seventh, the game entered extra innings where Iniguez had another clutch hit, hitting a solo home run to right center to put the Beach back in front, 4-3. CSUN had another rally in them, as Galindo doubled to right field, and scored after an RBI single from Alexis Chavez.

Tiara Westbrook singled to start the bottom of the 10th inning, and after a double from Galindo, a sacrifice fly brought the game to a close as CSUN walked off for the victory.

Long Beach State will remain on the road as Big West conference play continues, as the Beach will take on UC Davis for a three-game series beginning on Saturday, March 29.
