Women’s Water Polo Hosts CSUN In Only Action This Week

LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 6 Long Beach State is back at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center for the next three games starting with conference play against No. 23 CSUN on Saturday. The following weekend the Beach will play a pair of games to close their home schedule for the season, facing No. 11 UC San Diego March 29 and No. 1 Stanford March 30.
Long Beach State (11-9, 2-1 Big West) split their last two games as the Beach dominated Bucknell, 25-7 at home before facing No. 3 Hawai'i on the road losing in a sudden death overtime, 9-8. Spanish duo of Martina Cardona and Elisa Portillo continue to lead the Beach on offense this season, combining for over 100 goals. Portillo scored a team-high of six goals against the Bison and recorded a hat trick against the Rainbow Wahine. The junior also added two assists and two steals on the week. Cardona added five against Bucknell and a pair against UH. Senior defender Jamie Oberman has found her groove on offense and leads the team in assists with 28 as well as adding 20 goals. In cage, senior Chelsea Oliver had an impressive match against the 'Bows stopping 12 shots and adding two steals.
CSUN (15-9, 0-3 Big West) faced two ranked opponents on the Aztec Invitational dropping contests against No. 14 Princeton, 18-7 and hosts No. 20 San Diego State, 16-12. The Matadors look for the first conference win of the season as they faced No. 3 Hawai'i, No. 8 UC Irvine and No. 16 UC Davis losing all contests. Senior Dorottya Telek leads CSUN and the conference with impressive 91 goals and contributes with 38 assists. Senior Anna Pal has a team-high of 62 assists and is second on the team with 49 goals. Goalkeeper Erika Staine leads the Matadors on defense with 89 saves, seven assists and seven steals so far in the season.
