Ashworth's two hits leads the Dirtbags
LONG BEACH, Calif.—Cal Poly defeated Long Beach State 3-1 Friday night in the Big West baseball opener at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
The Dirtbags put runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the second. Easton Elliot ran the count to 3-2 against Griffin Naess before hitting a ground back toward Naess on the mound. Naess backhanded the ball, fielded it, and threw it onto first for the final out.
Kyle Ashworth led off the third with a walk. Armando Briseno's Texas Leaguer to center allowed him to be aggressive as he took third on the play while Briseno went second on the throw down to third. With the infield in, Naess struck out Alex Champagne. Naess' first pitch hit Connor Charpiot to load the bases. Dylan Lina grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the frame.
Ryan Fenn opened the Cal Poly fourth with the Mustangs' first hit, a single to left. With one out, former Long Beach State catcher Jack Collins hit a two-run home run to put Cal Poly into the lead. Casey Murray Jr. reached on an infield single. He advanced to second on a Dylan Kordic sac bunt. Nate Castellon made it to first on a Dirtbags' error. Jake Downing's single to right center drove in Murray Jr. With runners on the corners, Zach Daudet popped out to short for the third out.
Troy Cooper relieved Naess to begin the bottom of the seventh. He walked Conner Stewart before hitting Elliot with a 0-2 pitch. Ashworth bunted for a base hit to load the bases. With the count 1-0 on Briseno, Cooper balked in Stewart. Briseno grounded out to third. Cooper hit Champagne to reload the bases. Jacob Torres relieved Cooper to face Charpiot. Charpiot's infield fly to second resulted in the second out. Lina fell behind in the count 0-2 before running to a full count. A Torres fastball hit the inside corner for the strikeout to end the inning.
Mustangs' closer Tanner Sagouspe came on in the ninth. He registered the first two outs before walking Briseno. Champagne, the potential tying run, grounded out to short to end the game.
Cal Poly's relievers struck out five of the final seven Dirtbags' batters they faced. The trio recorded nine strikeouts in the game. Murray Jr. led the Mustangs with two of the six Cal Poly hits. Ashworth charted two of the five LBSU hits in the game. Long Beach State used four pitchers (Kellan Montgomery, Cristien Banda, Joey Iglesias, and Albert Roblez) who tallied 10 strikeouts.
