Cadena goes 3-for-4 with three RBI for Long Beach State
LONG BEACH, Calif.—Pepperdine scored three times in the top of the ninth to defeat Long Beach State 6-5 Tuesday night at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
Esteban Sepulveda homered to lead off the top of the second for the Waves. Pepperdine put runners on the corners with two outs. The Waves attempted a double steal, which saw both runners break towards the next bag. Andrew stayed in the rundown long enough between first and second for Luke Pemberton to score the second run.
Easton Elliot doubled down the left field line with two outs in the bottom of the third. Kyle Ashworth brought Elliot home with a triple to the right-center gap. Nathan Cadena's two-out infield single in the bottom of the fourth drove in Alex Champagne to tie the score.
Connor Charpiot led off the bottom of the sixth win with an opposite-field single to right off Pepperdine's third pitcher of the game, Jackson Pace. Champagne followed with a single through the right side. Luke Taylor's sacrifice bunt was successful as both runners advanced a base. With the infield in, Armando Briseno hit a grounder to shortstop Justin Rubin. Rubin's throw was in the dirt, allowing Charpiot to score. Champagne headed to third as Briseno made it to second. Cadena singled up the middle to drive in two runs, making it 5-2.
Cade Barry relieved Pace. Reid Montgomery walked. With the count 3-2 to Dylan Jackson, Cadena and Montgomery completed a successful double steal. Jackson worked out a walk to load the bases. Elliot was retired on an infield fly to shortstop. Ashworth lined out to right for the final out.
Joe Cardinale began the top of the eighth with a bunt single to third. Cardinale advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt by LBSU reliever Joey Iglesias. Iglesias bounced back to strike out Julian Nunez. Rubin hit a grounded back to Iglesias, who threw to first for the second out as Cardinale advanced to third. Iglesias hit Max Bernal to bring up Sepulveda, who singled through the right side to score Cardinale. Pemberton flew out to center for the final out.
Adam Troy, Pepperdine's sixth pitcher of the game, walked Briseno to begin the bottom of the eighth. Cadena singled through the left side to push Briseno to second. After failing to get the bunt down in two attempts, Montgomery struck out for out number one. On the first pitch to Conner Stewart, the Dirtbags attempted a double steal, which saw Briseno thrown out at third. Stewart lined out to third to send the game to the ninth.
Van Larson entered for the Dirtbags to try and close out the Waves in the ninth. Larson's first pitch hit Savage. Joey Damelio ran for Savage as Cam Conley came to the plate. Conley lined a shot to third, where Cadena made the catch. Brodey Bitove walked on a 3-2 pitch. With the righthanded hitting Cardinale coming up, the Dirtbags relieved Larson in favor of righty Michael Pirrello. Jakob Russell relieved Pirrello. With the count 2-2, Russell hit Julian Nunez to bring in the fourth Waves' run. The Dirtbags again went to the bullpen, calling in Tyler Gebb to face Rubin.
