After dropping the doubles point, Long Beach State took each of the top four singles matches to extend their winning streak to six straight matches.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Playing their third match in three days, Long Beach State Tennis battled back from a doubles point loss with an impressive singles performance, taking the top four flights all in straight sets on the way to a 4-2 win over George Washington to close their trip back east.
"A strong weekend of tennis for the team," said head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. "To win three difficult matches indoors says a lot about this team. I'm very proud of our fight this weekend."
Long Beach State (7-2) had won the doubles point in each of their first two matches of the road trip against Georgetown and Navy, but slipped behind against George Washington (4-4) on Saturday. Madison Lee and Victoria Sasinka defeated Diana De Simone and Thea Jagare 6-1 and after two dominant wins to start the trip, Cecilia Costa and Johanna Hiesmair were finally tripped up 6-4 by Karen Verduzco and Vaida Matuseviciute as the Revolutionaries took the doubles point.
The Beach stormed back in singles with a dominant performance. Costa set the tone with a 6-2, 6-1 win in the second flight over Matuseviciute to even the match at 1-1, and Jagare quickly followed with her third singles win of the weekend, 6-4, 6-2 over Madison Lee.
Long Beach State pulled closer with a 7-5, 6-3 win from Daria Malaescu in the fourth flight, and while the Beach dropped one singles match from Hiesmair, Diana De Simone closed out the win in the top flight, 6-4, 6-3 as the Beach won all four of the top flights in singles in straight sets to grab the win.
Returning home after four matches away, Long Beach State begins a six-match homestand at the Rhodes Tennis Center on Thursday, March 6 against Youngstown State at 2 p.m.
