Champagne has two hits to lead the Dirtbags

SAN DIEGO—The University of Utah defeated Long Beach State 9-1 in the final game of the Tony Gwynn Legacy Monday afternoon at San Diego State's Tony Gwynn Stadium.

Utah took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.  Core Jackson tripled with one out and scored on a Tyler Quinn sacrifice fly. The Utes went up 2-0 on a Santino Panaro safety squeeze bunt that scored Kaden Carpenter. Utah loaded the bases with two outs, but Owen Geiss got Jackson to fly out to right to end the inning.

The Dirtbags loaded the bases with two outs but couldn't score when reliever Easton Jones got Luke Taylor to fly out to center to conclude matters. Taking advantage of Long Beach State's error, the Utes's Austen Rellig's two-out single in the bottom of the third drove in Jake Long to make it 3-0. With one out in the top of the sixth, Dylan Lina was hit by a Jones pitch. Lina moved to third on a Taylor double. With two outs, Nathan Cadena walked to load the bases. Dillon Fine relieved Jones.  Fine induced Trotter Enright to fly out to left to keep the score at 3-0.

Connor Stewart led off the top of the seventh with a single to left center. Jackson Elder entered in place of Fine. With one out, Stewart advanced to second on a failed Elder pickoff attempt. Stewart went to third on an Alex Champagne grounder to short. Stewart scored on an Elder wild pitch to break the seal for the Dirtbags.

The first two Utes of the bottom of the seventh reached base after being hit by Arthur Liu, who became the fourth pitcher of the day for Long Beach State. Tyler Gebb replaced Liu and walked Matt Flaharty to load the bases. Jackson grounded into a 4-6 fielder's choice, which allowed Panaro to score. Quinn flew out to left, but the ball wasn't deep enough to allow either runner move up a base. Long singled through the right side to drive in Demitri Diamont as Jackson went to third. Long stole second base before Carpenter fouled to third for the final out. The Utes scored four times with two outs in the bottom of the eighth with two outs for the final 9-1 score.

Champagne had two of the seven Dirtbags' hits. Jackson went 2-for-5 with two RBI to lead the Utes' (7-1) offense.

Long Beach State (4-4) returns to Bohl Diamond at Blair Field Friday when the Dirtbags begin a three-game series against Michigan (4-3). Coverage on ESPN+ begins at 6 p.m.
