LBSU wins the game win the top of the ninth
LA JOLLA, Calif.—Connor Charpiot's single in the top of the ninth scored Kyle Ashworth for the game-winning run as Long Beach State defeated Pepperdine 3-2 in the second game of the Tony Gwynn Legacy Saturday afternoon at UC San Diego's Triton Ballpark.
Justin Rubin led off the bottom of the first for Pepperdine by doubling to center. Max Bernal worked out a walk against Josh Donegan. Both runners advanced a base on an Andrew Savage sacrifice bunt. Finley Buckner's grounder to short drove in Rubin to give the lead to the Waves.
The Dirtbags tied the score in the top of the third. Dylan Lina led off the inning with a triple. He scored on a one-out Armando Briseno grounder to second.
Briseno walked to lead off the top of the fifth. He moved to second on a Nathan Cadena sacrifice bunt. Briseno advanced to a third on a Matthew Boyer balk. Boyer walked Trevor Enright to give the Dirtbags runners on the corners. Efren Ortega grounded out to first, which allowed Briseno to score the go-ahead run.
Joe Cardinale singled for the Waves with one out in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Bernal reached on an error but was thrown out at second on a 5-4 fielder's choice to keep the score 2-1.
Donegan limited the Waves to two hits over his five-inning stint before allowing Nick Williams to begin the bottom of the sixth. He walked Buckner, who went to second on a passed ball. Julian Nunez singled through the left side, allowing Buckner to go to third. A pitch hit pinch-hitter Luke Pemberton to load the bases. Williams rallied, striking out RJ Jimerson and Brodey Bitlove. Williams induced a Cardinale grounder to third to end the inning.
Bernal doubled with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Williams struck out Savage before Buckner lined out to short to end the frame.
Williams hit Nunez to begin the bottom of the eighth. He advanced to third on a Cal Wipf grounder. Jimerson went up 2-0 in the count, but swinging away on the third pitch, he popped out to third base. On a 3-1 count, Bitove singled up the middle to tie the game. Owen Geiss replaced Williams. His first batter was a pinch-hitter, Max Aude, who flew out.
Ashworth led off the top of the ninth with a single to center. Luke Taylor reached on a bunt single that pushed Ashworth to second. Pepperdine reliever Collin Valentine struck out Lina on a 3-2 count. With the count 2-0, Charpiot singled to center to drive in Ashworth to return the lead to the Dirtbags.
Briseno's grounder to short resulted in a 6-4 fielder's choice as Taylor took third. Reid Montgomery ran for Taylor as Cadena came to bat. The senior first baseman faced a new pitcher, Adam Troy. Briseno moved into scoring position due to defensive indifference. Cadena grounded out to send the game into the bottom of the ninth.
Geiss retired the Waves (0-7) to pick up the win at the bottom of the ninth. Charpiot had two of the seven Long Beach State hits. Donegan, Williams, and Geiss combined on a five-hitter. The trio struck out nine and walked three.
On Sunday, Long Beach State (3-3) faces Seattle U (0-5) at UC San Diego. The action gets underway at noon.
