Montgomery improves to 2-0 as Briseno and Champagne both record two hits

SAN DIEGO—Long Beach State defeated California Baptist 10-3 in the first game of the Tony Gwynn Legacy Friday afternoon at San Diego State's Tony Gwynn Stadium.

Alex Champagne led off the game with an opposite-field double to left. With one out, Kyle Ashworth walked. Dylan Lina came to bat when the base runners attempted a double steal. Ashworth was thrown out at second, but Champagne scored to break the seal for the Dirtbags.  The Lancers tied the score in the bottom of the first on a two-out Ryan Kim RBI double.

Both teams put runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the fourth and top of the fifth but could not push through a run.

The Dirtbags broke the game open in the top of the sixth. Taking advantage of four walks and an error, Long Beach State scored eight runs. Armando Briseno drove in two of the eight runs. Four other Dirtbags contributed an RBI during the inning.

Connor Charpiot and Ashworth walked to begin the eighth with one out, a Briseno's grounder to short-scored Charpiot for Briseno's third RBI.

The Lancers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Reliever Austin Puett hit pinch-hitter Connor Ross to score a run. Alex Ramos came in for Puett. Ryan Kim singled in a run to make it 10-3. Jake Brown's infield fly was the second out. Pinch-hitter Bubba Rocha fouled out to first to end the game.

Briseno added two hits to go along with his runs batted in. Champagne charted two hits and two RBI. Kellan Montgomery improved to 2-0 on the year. The LBSU starter went five innings. Scattering six hits and striking out two. The five Long Beach State relievers allowed only three hits over the final four innings.
