Long Beach State nearly comes back from four runs down
Nathan Cadena's two-run home run over the blue monster in left field scored Connor Charpiot put the Dirtbags up 2-0 in the top of the second.
Beau Ankeney and Devan Ornelas recorded back-to-back singles to begin the bottom of the second for the Lions. Kolton Freeman's sacrifice bunt advanced the runners up a base. LBSU starter Albert Roblez struck out Joe Reid. A Roblez wild pitch allowed Ankeney to score and Ornelas to get to third. JD Dunn flew out to left to end the inning.
Cam Hassert singled off Long Beach State reliever Ka'imi Kahalekai with one out in the bottom of the third. The second out was Alex Champagne's diving catch in left center on a Colby Wallace liner. Kahalekai struck out Nate Savoie for the final out.
Ankeney singled to begin the bottom of the fourth. A Kahalekai pitch hit Ornelas. Freeman's pop up was caught by Charpiot at first as the umpires called the infield fly rule on the action. Reid singled to left to drive in Ankeney as Ornelas took second. LMU's double steal attempt was successful, putting both runners in scoring position. Dunn grounded out to short, scoring Ornelas. Kahalekai struck out Luke Skinner, who was looking for the third out.
Armando Briesno walked with two outs in the top of the fifth. He went to second on a Kyle Ashworth single. Both runners advanced a base on a Zack Mack wild pitch. Mack struck out Dylan Lina, who was looking for the final out.
Hassert's infield single off the leg of LBSU reliever Cristien Banda began the bottom of the fifth. Banda bounced back by striking out Wallace. Hassert stole second on a 1-1 Banda pitch. Banda struck out Savoie swinging. Ankeney doubled off the blue monster to score Hassert. Ornelas walked to bring up Freeman. Despite Champagne's best efforts with a dive in center, the ball landed just in front of the senior, scoring two runs. Reid doubled down the right field line to give the Lions a pair of runners in scoring position. Dunn popped up to short for the third out.
Briseno's two-out, two-run opposite field home run to right field in the top of the seventh cut the Lions lead to 6-4. Cole Stucky relieved Mack. His first batter was Ashworth, who hit him with a pitch. LMU's gamble to shift against Lina worked as hit grounded out to Hassert up the middle for the last out.
Back-to-back singles with one out in the bottom of the seventh brought up Reid for LMU. The Lions attempted a double steal, but Freeman was thrown out. Reid walked on a 3-2 Arthur Liu pitch to give LMU runners on the corners. Pinch-runner Ashten Wong stole second. Liu struck out Dunn, looking to wrap up the frame.
LMU added one run in the eighth when Ankeney was hit by a Joey Iglesias pitch with the bases loaded.
LMU (4-1) was led by Ankeney, who scored 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. Hassert was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. The Lions' pitchers combined on a five-hitter.
