The Beach had a split on the day, falling in their second game against Iowa State.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State got off to a strong start, riding a three-run home run from Rebekah Durazo and a strong pitching performance to a 4-0 win over Saint Mary's, but fell 4-2 against Iowa State to split their two game Saturday from the LBSU Softball Complex.
In the opening game of the day, Saint Mary's (2-6) threatened Long Beach State (4-3) in the top of the first. Sam Buckley worked a leadoff walk, and then an error put two runners on. Another walk loaded the bases with no outs.
Shannon Haddad and the Beach recovered, however. A force out at the plate on a ground ball gave the Beach one out, and then after a Haddad strikeout, a popup ended the threat and completely turned the momentum of the contest.
Jacquelyn Bickar and Carly Robbins each singled to get the Beach started, and then Rebekah Durazo followed with her second home run of the season, a three-run shot off the scoreboard in left field to give the Beach a 3-0 lead.
Long Beach State added one more in the third, pushing Robbins around again with an RBI double from freshman Lina Apodaca. All of that support was plenty for Haddad, who would only give up one more hit the rest of the way, finishing off a complete game with five strikeouts as the Beach closed out the Gaels 4-0.
Iowa State (3-4) had a big early home run of their own in the second game which helped the Cyclones hold off the Beach. Freshman Brynne Nally and Iowa State's Lauren Schurman each went through two quick scoreless innings, but the Cyclones were able to break through in the third inning.
Angelina Allen hit a one-out single which was followed by a double from Reagan Bartholomew to plate the first run of the game for Iowa State. Two more doubles in the next inning scored one more run, and a two-run home run from pinch hitter Tatum Johnson made the score 4-0 in favor of Iowa State in the fourth.
The Beach pulled back one run in the bottom half with a two-out rally. Durazo doubled in the first hit of the game for the Beach, and Brooklyn Lee added an RBI single to cut the lead to 4-1. A double from KaLeena Gonzalez led to another run in the fifth, but Bickar in the fifth and pinch runner Macie Lawrence were each stranded on third in the fifth and seventh innings as the Beach couldn't catch all the way back against Iowa State in a 4-2 defeat.
Long Beach State will finish the Wilson Tournament on Sunday, with four games at the LBSU Softball Complex. Beach Softball will feature in one, taking on Kansas at 4:30 p.m. to finish the day.
