The Beach returns to Lihue as Long Beach State aims for a four-peat this spring in the Big West.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State Men's Golf begins the second half of their season with a stacked three-day tournament, once again participating in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, hosted by Hawai'i at the Ocean Course Hokuala in Kau'ai. The tournament will begin on Thursday, February 13 with a single round scheduled to be played each day.
The Beach starts off the spring ranked No. 39 in the nation, following a strong fall that saw the team finish in the Top 5 in all four of their tournaments. The Beach also had a Top 10 finisher individually in all four tournaments, with three Top 5 finishes, two from Charlie Forster and one from Alejandro de Castro Piera.
Those two golfers will lead the lineup for Long Beach State in Lihue. Forster finished the spring -15 against par with a 70.3 stroke average, and the senior had two Top 5 finishes while finishing no lower than 12th in four tournaments. He will take the top spot for LBSU, while de Castro will play second. de Castro shot 4-under at the William H. Tucker Invitational from New Mexico, finishing in a tie for fourth place and leading the Beach to a third place finish in Albuquerque.
Senior Clay Seeber will play third for Long Beach State. With 30 tournaments of experience, the veteran will help lead LBSU, while junior Jack Cantlay will play fourth. Tiger Tahvildari, a sophomore transfer from Orange Coast College will see his first action in the lineup, playing fifth. Tahvildari previously made his LBSU debut at the Badger Invitational as an individual.
Long Beach State will send an individual to this tournament as well, as Krishnav Chopraa will compete at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate. The sophomore closed out the spring well, finishing in a tie for 28th place at The Preserve Collegiate, third on the team for LBSU with a three-over par 219 finish after a career-low 67 from The Preserve in Carmel, Calif.
The field for the tournament is very strong. Out of the 17 teams slated to participate, 13 teams are in the Top 100 of the latest rankings, 7 are in the Top 50 including the Beach, and No. 10 Illinois, No. 16 Utah, No. 21 BYU and No. 23 San Diego State each start the spring in the Top 25.
Long Beach State has won the Big West in each of the last three seasons and have made three straight NCAA Regional appearances and will look to start the spring season strong against excellent competition.
