Double-doubles from Jones-Brown and Oliva Fernandez along with a decisive third-quarter surge lift the Beach at the Pyramid
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Long Beach State women's basketball used a strong third quarter and timely execution down the stretch to secure a 68–62 win over Hope International on Monday night at the LBS Financial Credit Union Pyramid.
The Beach trailed by one at halftime but came out of the locker room with renewed energy, outscoring the Royals 23–16 in the third quarter to seize control. Long Beach State built its largest lead of the night at nine points late in the period and never relinquished the advantage.
JaQuoia Jones-Brown led all scorers with 23 points while also pulling down a game-high 17 rebounds to record a dominant double-double. Judit Oliva Fernandez added 13 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists, anchoring the Beach on both ends of the floor to earn her second double-double of the season. Kennan Ka chipped in 10 points, and Morgan Mack provided a spark off the bench with eight points.
Long Beach State's interior presence proved decisive, holding a 42–22 edge in points in the paint and a 55–41 rebounding advantage. The Beach also converted 12 second-chance points, capitalizing on offensive rebounds to maintain momentum during key stretches.
Despite a late three-pointer that cut the deficit to four with 13 seconds remaining, the Royals were unable to close the gap as Long Beach State sealed the game at the free-throw line.
Kennan Ka made it clear Long Beach State's win Monday night was more than just a result. It was a reminder of what the Beach believe they can become.
"We'll enjoy this one, but we're not satisfied," Ka said. "We know we're capable of a lot more, so it's about refocusing and carrying that mindset into conference play."
