Women’s Volleyball Road Trip Comes To A Close With A Loss At UCSB

11/8/2025 9:43:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

Freshman Preslie Yates finished with 8 blocks and 7 kills on .353 hitting.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Freshman Preslie Yates had the best match of her young career, setting career highs in both blocks and kills for Long Beach State, but the Gauchos earned the edge in two close sets to start the match and defeated the Beach 3-1 in Santa Barbara.

Logan King and Elise Agi shared the load offensively for Long Beach State (17-8, 10-4 Big West), each finishing with 15 kills alongside the seven from Yates. The Beach also had 12 blocks on the night, eight coming from Yates, but UC Santa Barbara (18-8, 10-4 Big West) had a dig advantage of 66 to 47 with three players in double figures to help stymie the Beach.

Two early blocks helped UCSB take early control of the first set, moving out to a 6-1 lead. A Natalie Reagan timeout helped Long Beach State recover, but the Gauchos put together another push to go from a 10-6 lead to a 14-6 one. Long Beach State would continue to battle back. Laurel Barsocchini picked up an ace to cut the lead to 17-12, and another ace by Logan King cut the lead to three at 18-15. An overpass kill from Ayva Ostovar gave the Gauchos a 21-16 lead, and despite one last rally from the Beach, UCSB finished off the first set 25-21.

Long Beach State opened the second set with the first two points, but a challenge on a touch at 9-9 went the way of the Gauchos, and up 10-8 they opened an 11-8 lead with a block from Eva Travis and Jordyn Johnson. A block from Nieko Thomas and Madi Maxwell helped Long Beach State cut the lead to 16-15, but back-to-back kills from the Gauchos let UCSB recover at 19-16. The Beach saved two set points late, but UC Santa Barbara closed the second set by the same 25-21 margin.

Two kills from Logan King and an ace from Elise Agi helped Long Beach State open the third set on a 4-0 run as the Beach managed the momentum throughout the third set. A Madi Maxwell ace maintained the LBSU lead at 11-7, and Preslie Yates hit back-to-back kills to open up a 16-10 lead. A long rally was won by Long Beach State late in the set for a 22-17 lead, and the Beach closed out a 25-18 win in the third. Long Beach State held the Gauchos to just .030 hitting in the set on the way to the win.

The fourth set started very close, with an Eva Travis ace giving the Gauchos the first edge. Tied 10-10, the Gauchos pushed to a 13-10 lead on two kills from Travis and Gabi Martinez. The momentum at that point turned, however, as the Gauchos ultimately had their best hitting set of the night to close out a 25-14 win to clinch the match.

Long Beach State closes out the home portion of their regular season schedule next week with a pair of matches, hosting UC Riverside and UC Davis next weekend. The Beach and the Highlanders will be on ESPN+ in the first of the two matches at 7 p.m. on November 13.
