Long Beach State’s first Big West setback snapped a 10-match win streak.
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Long Beach State's 10-match win streak was snapped on the road after CSUN snapped its own 4-match losing streak with a 25-19, 25-18, 25-13 sweep over the Beach.
Sophomore Sidney Hamaker paced the LBSU offense with a match-high 13 kills, but CSUN's balanced attack produced a .379 hitting percentage as the Matadors added 9 blocks and 5 aces in a well-balanced performance.
Long Beach State claimed an early 3-0 lead after Pola Bujnarowska put away the game's first point with a kill, followed by back-to-back aces from Kendal Murphy. However, the host Matadors quickly settled in with an 8-2 run to take the early lead. A Sidney Hamaker kill pulled the Beach within a point, 12-11, before CSUN went on an 11-5 scoring run en route to a 25-19 opening-set win.
The Beach generated early momentum again in the second set, taking an 11-7 lead early in the set behind 3 Hamaker kills and a pair of CSUN service errors. The Matadors answered again with a 16-6 run, notching 4 of their 6 blocks of the set during the run to help secure a 25-18 win and a two-set lead.
CSUN never trailed in the third set, although Hamaker collected a pair of early kills which kept the Beach within striking distance at 7-5. The Matadors answered again, scoring 14 of the next 17 points to extend the lead into double figures at 21-8 before CSUN finished off the sweep with a 25-13 win.
Junior Madi Maxwell was the LBSU digs leader with 9, and junior Pola Bujnarowska had a hand in 2 of Long Beach State's 3 blocks in the match, registering 1 solo block and 1 block assist along with 3 kills.
The Beach will close out their six-match road swing with another Big West road match, taking on Cal State Bakersfield on October 3 in a match which will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
