Long Beach State holds a halftime lead and outplays the Beavers through three periods in 71–55 road result
CORVALLIS, Ore. — Long Beach State (0-6) delivered one of its most balanced and competitive efforts of the season through three quarters on Sunday afternoon, but a decisive fourth-quarter surge from Oregon State (5-1) proved the difference as the Beach fell 71–55 at Gill Coliseum.
Long Beach State opened with a slow offensive start, but its defensive activity kept the Beavers in check long enough for the offense to settle in. Judit Oliva Fernandez scored the first bucket for the Beach, and Kennan Ka followed with a three to swing momentum. LBSU's pressure and second-chance efforts continued to chip away, and Rosie Akot capped the quarter with a driving layup to tie it 16–16.
The Beach carried that energy into the second quarter, taking the lead on a three from Akot as both teams traded runs throughout the period. JaQuoia Jones-Brown delivered several timely baskets to steady LBSU's offense, and despite a late turnover that cut the lead to one, Christy Reynoso buried a three in the closing seconds to send Long Beach State into halftime ahead 33–31.
Head Coach Amy Wright noted that her freshmen "came in and filled a gap when things weren't flowing," pointing to Reynoso's composure under pressure, Morgan Mack's shot-making and Akot's two-way presence. "I always tell them, 'Make me think. Make me think about giving you more minutes.' And today, they made me think," she said.
Long Beach State maintained control in the third quarter, using pressure defense, paint touches and rebounding to stay in front. After an Oregon State layup briefly pushed the Beavers ahead, Jones-Brown immediately answered with a jumper to swing the lead back to the Beach. LBSU remained sharp on the glass and took a 48–47 advantage into the fourth.
Oregon State shifted the game with a burst of defensive intensity to open the final frame, holding the Beach scoreless for nearly five minutes during an 11-0 run. The Beavers capitalized on turnovers and second-chance opportunities to create separation. Akot broke the drought with a layup just under the five-minute mark, but Oregon State continued to convert around the rim and at the line to extend its lead.
Jones-Brown led Long Beach State with 16 points and five rebounds, while Akot produced her first career double double with 13 points and 13 boards. Ka and Mack each connected from deep, and Oliva Fernandez added six points, including a pair of interior finishes that fueled the Beach's third-quarter push.
Wright emphasized that despite the result, the team continues to show progress and must keep sharpening details as Big West play approaches. "I don't think we're the same team we were six games ago," she said. "We've got to keep growing. We also have to get better at guarding the post. We're giving up too many paint points, and we can't use size or experience as an excuse. Until we take people out of what they want to do inside, that's what we're going to see."
Long Beach State returns to the LBS Financial Credit Union Pyramid on Thursday, Dec. 4, hosting UC Santa Barbara in the Big West opener. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
