LONG BEACH, Calif. — Long Beach State women's basketball stayed competitive throughout Wednesday night's matchup with future Big West opponent California Baptist, but an explosive first quarter from the Lancers put the Beach in an early hole they couldn't climb out of, as LBSU fell 83–60 at the Walter Pyramid.
"We are in a growth mindset," head coach Amy Wright said. "I saw a lot of growth in these young women from last weekend into today, and you can only continue to build on that with a young team. So, we are focusing on the positives that came from today: a lot more points, a lot more assists and finally crashing on the boards a bit."
JaQuoia Jones-Brown paced Long Beach State with a career-high 19 points and seven rebounds. Judit Oliva Fernandez added the team's second double-double of the season with 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Khylee Pepe contributed 13 points, nine rebounds, and a team-leading five assists.
On the defensive end, the Beach showed toughness on the glass, outrebounding a CBU team that entered the game ranked No. 3 nationally in defensive rebounds per game and No. 9 in overall rebounds, 51–42.
Long Beach State also held the Lancers to their lowest-scoring quarter in the final frame, allowing just 14 points in the fourth.
The Beach will look to build on Wednesday's progress as they continue their homestand Saturday, November 15 against Sacramento State. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid.
