"Really proud of the fight the team showed today in brutal winds," said head coach Rob Murray. "20-30 mph winds make this course incredibly difficult and for us to grind through that shows real character."
de Castro Piera closed the tournament with another very consistent round. With four birdies and just one bogey Saturday, his 69 moved the junior into a tie for fourth place overall and helped lift the Beach up to third place, passing Grand Canyon. The junior didn't a have a round higher than one-over par across six over the past week.
"Alejandro was a rock for us all week," noted Murray. "He's really matured and is playing some great golf."
Clay Seeber closed the tournament with an even-par 72 to finish in a tie for 12th place, sharing that spot with Charlie Forster who had the day's drop score of 77 after a really strong start to the tournament on Friday.
Jaden Huggins shot a 74 Saturday to climb 12 spots into a tie for 35th, again sharing with a teammate in Jack Cantlay whose 76 Saturday also left the junior in a tie for 35th, as all five golfers in the lineup for Long Beach State finished well within the top half of the 96-golfer field. Krishnav Chopraa, playing as an individual finished the tournament with a 77 overall and tied for 66th.
Overall on the week, Long Beach State finished 27-4-1 with two of the only four programs to finish in front of the Beach being the host teams in Fort Collins, Colo. and Albuquerque.
The Beach will have a brief respite before getting back in action at the Badger Invitational hosted by Wisconsin. Held over three days, that tournament will begin on Sunday, September 29.
