Ninth Inning Rally Sends UC Davis Past The Dirtbags 5-4

Long Beach State took the lead in the top of the ninth with a run

DAVIS, Calif.—UC Davis scored twice in the bottom of the ninth as the Aggies defeated Long Beach State 5-4 in the Big West baseball opener between the two clubs Friday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.

Connor Charpiot put the Dirtbags on the scoreboard when he hit his third home run of the year with two outs in the top of the first.

A two-out error at the bottom of the first allowed the Aggies to score three runs and take the lead. Tyler Howard's two-run double highlighted the scoring for UC Davis.

John Newman Jr. walked with two outs in the top of the fourth. He went to third on an Armando Briseno single up the middle. A Bryan Green pitch hit Alex Champagne to load the bases. Green ran the count to 3-2 against Cole Santander before the Dirtbags' designated hitter flew out to left to end the inning.

Nick Leehey singled to begin the bottom of the fourth. He advanced to third on a Ryan Lee double. Mark Wolbert attempted to bunt the runners over, but Adrian Lopez, the Dirtbags' second baseman, fielded the ball and tagged Wolbert out at first base. With the infield in, Alex Gouveia popped out to short against Mason Dillow, the second LBSU pitcher of the day. Tyler Howard grounded out to second for the final out.

With one out in the bottom of the fifth against Collin Miskelly, Jason Hanson and Riley Acosta recorded back-to-back singles. Miskelly struck out Braydon Wooldridge before a 0-1 Miskelly wild pitch pushed both runners up a base. The freshman lefty bounced back, getting Leehey to fly out to center for the third out.

With Kaden Hogan in relief of Green, Charpiot reached on an error to get the top of the sixth underway. Newman Jr. singled through the left side as Charpiot took second. Briseno flew out to right, allowing Charpiot to advance to third. Champagne was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Santander struck out before pinch-hitter Jonny Rodriguez flew out to center to keep the score 3-1.

Kyle Ashworth doubled with one out in the top of the seventh. Hogan struck out Lopez, but Lopez reached first on an Acosta passed ball. Ashworth went to third on the play. On the first pitch to Charpiot, Lopez stole second. Charpiot's opposite field single through the right side scored Ashworth on the second pitch. Newman Jr.'s grounder against the third pitcher of the game, Kaden Riccomini, drove in Lopez to tie the game.

Nathen Morris relieved Miskelly and gave up an Ethan Felix single to start the bottom of the seventh. Hanson flew out to right before Acosta grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Carter Delaney became the fourth Aggies pitcher in the Long Beach State eighth. Santander singled through the right side with one out. Justin Roulston ran for Santander, stealing second with the count 1-1 on Rodriguez. Rodriguez struck out with the count 2-2 on Ty Borgogno. Roulston stole third. Borgogno struck out to end the inning.

Morris walked Wooldridge to begin the bottom of the eighth. Leehey attempted to bunt. Newman Jr., the LBSU catcher, fielded the ball, which started an apparent 2-6-3 double play. With no instant replay available, the four umpires convened and determined that it was a foul ball, overturning the call and making the count 0-1. Leehey took advantage, executing a successful 3-4 sacrifice bunt, advancing Wooldridge to second.

Lee ran the count to 3-2 before Morris struck him out. The Aggies sent a left-handed hitter to pinch-hit in Damian Stone for Nick Iverson. The Dirtbags matched the change, bringing lefty Nick Williams to face Stone. The Dirtbags won the battle. With the count 2-2, Stone lined out to Ashworth on the right field warning track.

Ashworth recorded an opposite-field single to left to begin the top of the ninth. Delaney was called for a balk, which allowed Ashworth to reach second. Lopez's chopper to second allowed Ashworth to advance to third. Charpiot's sac fly to left scored Ashworth for the lead.

Dirtbags' closer Mike Villani came on for the ninth. He retired Gouveia on a fly ball to right to begin the action. Howard walked before Felix doubled down the right field line. Hanson was intentionally walked to load the bases. Acosta tied the game on a 6-4 fielder's choice that scored Howard. With runners on the corners, a Villani wild pitch went the backstop, scoring the game-winning run for the Aggies.

Charpiot led the Dirtbags, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Ashworth was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Leehey and Felix both had two hits for UC Davis.

Long Beach State (20-21-1, 7-12 Big West) and the Aggies (20-23, 6-13 Big West) resume the series Saturday afternoon. Coverage on ESPN+ begins at 1 p.m.
