John Newman Jr.'s ninth home run begins the rally
John Newman Jr. opened a six-run fourth inning for the Dirtbags when he hit his team-leading ninth home run, a two-run blast. Newman Jr.'s home run began a string of five consecutive hits for Long Beach State. Cole Santander doubled in Armando Briseno before Jonny Rodriguez's two-RBI single that plated Justin Roulston and Alex Champagne. An Adrian Lopez RBI ground out to short plated Kyle Ashworth to cap off the rally.
In the bottom of the fourth, Riley Acosta's double and Nick Leehey's single each drove in a run for the Aggies.
Ethan Felix homered to lead off the UC Davis' sixth. Damian Stone singled and advanced to second on a Long Beach State error. J. Hanson grounded out to second, which allowed Stone to move to third. Stone scored on Acosta's grounder to short to make it 6-4.
Nathen Morris relieved Owen Geiss in the seventh and set down the first four batters he faced until Felix doubled with one out in the bottom of the eighth. With the lefthanded hitting Stone coming up, lefty Nick Williams relieved Morris. With the count 2-1, Stone hit a liner to Armando Briesno at short. Briseno caught the ball and stepped on the second base bag to complete the double play and end the inning.
A pair of UC Davis pitchers, Mason Lerma and Carter Speights, retired 10 Long Beach State batters in a row before a third pitcher, Andrew LaCour, hit Rodriguez to begin the inning. Ty Borgogno's sacrifice bunt advanced Rodriguez to second. Ashworth reached on an error, reaching second on the play as Rodriguez headed to third. Lopez's opposite field double down the right field line drove in both runs for an 8-4 score. Lopez stole third.
The Aggies brought the infield in against Connor Charpiot. Running on Charpiot's contact, Lopez was thrown out at home as Charpiot advanced to second on the play. Newman Jr. walked. With runners on first and second, LaCour threw a wild pitch, which allowed both runners to move up. Acosta, UC Davis' catcher, tried to throw Newman Jr. out at second. His throw was high, allowing Charpiot to score for a 9-4 LBSU lead.
Mike Villani entered to start the ninth for the Dirtbags. He walked Hanson, Acosta, and Leehey to load the bases. Ryan Lee grounded into a 5-4-3 double play as Hanson scored. Braydon Wooldridge reached on an error, scoring Acosta and cutting the lead to three. Alex Gouveia grounded out to Villani to end the game.
Newman Jr. and Santander both recorded two hits for the Dirtbags. Lopez posted three RBI, while Newman Jr. and Rodriguez charted two RBI. Felix recorded two hits for the Aggies.
Long Beach State (21-21-1, 8-12 Big West) and UC Davis (20-24, 6-14 Big West) conclude the series Sunday afternoon. Streaming on ESPN+ begins at 1 p.m.
