Villani picks up his 10th save as Santander goes 2-for-3
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—Long Beach State defeated Cal Poly 5-3 Friday night at Baggett Stadium to even the Big West baseball series between the two clubs.
Ryan Fenn's blooper to left scored Ryan Stafford for the first run of the game for the Mustangs.
Jonny Rodriguez led off the top of the third with a single. He advanced to second on a Ty Borgogno grounder. Alex Champagne walked before a pitch hit Connor Charpiot to load the bases. With two outs, John Newman Jr.'s opposite-field double to the right-center gap cleared the bases for a 3-1 Long Beach State lead.
Jake Steels and Stafford recorded back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the third to record the second Cal Poly run.
Cole Santander doubled down the left field line with one out in the top of the fourth. Ty Borgogno's two-out single to right center drove in Santander for a 4-2 score.
Alejandro Garcia's double began the Mustangs' fourth. Cam Holiand's single scored Garica. With pinch-hitter Zach Daudet at the plate, Hoiland attempted to take second on an Owen Geiss pitch in the dirt. Newman Jr., the Dirtbags' catcher, fielded the ball and threw down to second to record the out, helping keep the score in favor of Long Beach State.
Alejandro Garza singled with one out in the bottom of the sixth, moving to second when Geiss walked Dylan Kordic. Lefty Nick Williams relieved Geiss to face the lefthanded-hitting Cam Holland. In response, the Mustangs went to a right-handed hitting pinch-hitter in Tate Shimao. Williams struck out Shimao looking for the second out. Daudet flew out to right to end the inning.

Grant Cherry entered to begin the seventh on the bump for the Dirtbags. He retired Cal Poly in order before Ryan Fenn reached on an error to start the eighth. Joe Yorke walked on four pitches. Garza hit a shot up the middle off Cherry's arm, resulting in a base hit that loaded the bases. After a few warmup pitches, Cherry stayed in the game to face Kordic. The Cal Poly left fielder struck out for the first out. With the count 2-1 on Wyatt King, Cherry got the ground ball he was looking for as the Dirtbags turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.
A Josh Volmerding pitch hit Borgogno to lead off the top of the ninth. With two outs, Borgogno stole second. Ashworth walked to bring up Newman Jr., the LBSU cleanup hitter. Cal Poly went to their closer, Tanner Sagouspe, to face Newman Jr. The Mustangs' righty won the battle, getting Newman Jr. to ground out to third.
