Cal Poly Scores Three In The Ninth To Defeat The Dirtbags 7-6

The season finale saw Cole Santander record three hits

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—Cal Poly scored three times in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Long Beach State x-x-6 Saturday afternoon in the 2024 baseball finale for both clubs.

On the game's fourth pitch, Kyle Ashworth hit a shot down the left field line that was initially ruled as a foul ball. Long Beach State interim head coach Bryan Peters asked the umpires to review the call as the game was being played without the benefit of instant replay. The umpires met and overturned the call, giving Ashworth his fourth home run of the season and the Dirtbags a 1-0 lead. Thanks to singles from John Newman Jr. and Cole Santander, LBSU put runners on second and third but could not push across any additional runs.

Cal Poly leadoff hitter Jake Steels tied the game with his seventh home run of the year to begin the bottom of the first for the Mustangs. Kellan Montgomery hit Ryan Stafford. Alejandro Garza beat the Dirtbags' shift with two outs and a single through the right side as Stafford took third. Montgomery battled back to strike out Dylan Kordic to end the inning.

Wyatt King's second hit of the year (in 18 at-bats) was a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the second, pushing the Mustangs into the lead for the first time.

Adrian Lopez stretched a two-out base hit in the top of the fifth from a single into a double. Newman Jr. recovered from being down 0-2 in the count to work out a walk. Santander doubled to center, driving in both Lopez and Newman Jr. to return the lead to the Dirtbags. A Jonny Rodriguez single scored Santander to increase the advantage to 4-2.

Steels homered for the second time, leading off the bottom of the fifth for the Mustangs. Ryan Fenn reached on an infield single with one out. Joe Yorke flew out to left. Garza flew out to Alex Champagne in right-center for the final out.

Justin Roulston singled to start the LBSU sixth. Champagne's sacrifice bunt advanced Roulston to second. Ty Borgogno grounded out to third, where Garza looked Roulston back to the second base bag and threw it onto first for the out. Ashworth tripled off the centerfield fence to score Roulston. Lopez worked the count to 3-0 against Cal Poly starter Griffin Naess before singling to left to plate Ashworth, making the score 6-3. Chris Downs entered in relief for the Mustangs. Lopez stole second on Downs' first pitch. Newman Jr. grounded out to third to end the inning.

Montgomery got the first out of the Cal Poly sixth before he was relieved by Collin Miskelly. Miskelly retired pinch-hitter Zach Daudet before walking King. Miskelly hit Aaron Casillas to give the Mustangs runners on first and second. Steels popped out to first for the final out.

Stafford singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh. With the shift on, Fenn lined into a 4-3 double play for the first two outs. A Miskelly 1-2 fastball hit Yorke. Miskelly and Garza battled before Garza after a nine-pitch at-bat. With the count 3-2, Miskelly struck out Kordic to quiet the Cal Poly threat.

Nathen Morris relieved Miskelly as the bottom of the eighth began. He got Daudet to fly out to left before he hit King with a count of 3-2. Casillas' opposite-field single to right pushed Daudet to second. Steels' opposite-field single to the right scored King. Stafford hit a liner to Lopez and second. He jumped in the air, caught the ball, and ran to second to complete the double play.

Fenn singled to right to begin the bottom of the ninth. Yorke singled to right center to give the Mustangs runners on the corners. Garza's sacrifice fly to left scored Fenn. Pinch-runner Tate Shimao could not advance on the play. Nick Williams relieved Morris for a lefty-lefty matchup against Kordic. Williams' first pitch went to the backstop, allowing Shimao to reach second. Williams walked Kordic. Williams hit pinch-hitter Evan Cloyd to load the bases. King drove in the game-winning runs with a double for the final 7-6.

Santander went 3-for-5 with two RBI to lead the Dirtbags. Ashworth was 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored.

King was 3-for-3 with three RBI for Cal Poly (35-22, 20-10 Big West). Steels ended the day 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored for the Mustangs.

Long Beach State ends 2024 with a 25-29-1 overall record, 10-20 in the Big West.
