Nick Marinconz goes 3-for-4 to lead Long Beach State
LONG BEACH, Calif.—Long Beach State walked a season-high 10 times as the Dirtbags defeated San Diego State 6-3 Tuesday night in baseball action at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The Dirtbags put runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the first, but SDSU starter Jadon Berchovich struck out John Newman Jr. to get out of the jam.
Long Beach State starter Van Larson hit Jacob McCombs to begin the bottom of the third. David Whittle's sac bunt advanced McCombs to second. Finley Bates grounded out to short as McCombs took third. Shaun Montoya walked to give the Aztecs runners on the corners. Larson struck out Irvin Weems looking to end the inning.
Jack Collins walked with one out off San Diego State reliever Chris Canavan. Armando Briseno followed with the Dirtbags' first hit, a single up the middle. Nick Marinconz doubled down the right field line to plate Collins and gave the Dirtbags the lead. With Briseno at third, Alex Champagne grounded out to second, scoring Briseno for a 2-0 advantage.
Kyle Ashworth walked to lead off the top of the fifth. Adrian Lopez followed for the second time in five innings with a walk. Jack Hammond reached on an error of his sac bunt attempt by Canavan to load the bases. The Aztecs called in Aidan Russell to face Newman Jr. Russell walked Newman Jr. to score Ashworth. Collins walked to drive in Lopez for a 4-0 score. Briseno flew out to right, but the ball wasn't deep enough for Hammond to attempt to tag up at third. Marinconz was called out due to the infield fly rule (to first) for the second out. Champagne struck out with the bases loaded for the final out.
Jake Jackson singled to begin the bottom of the fifth. He tried stretching the play into a double, but Ashworth threw him out at second on the play. McCombs singled through the right side before Larson struck out Whittle to end the inning.
Larson gave up three hits and struck out three in five innings. Freshman Collin Miskelly made his season debut in the sixth and gave up a Montoya single up the middle to get the inning underway. Miskelly walked Wells, who brought up the Aztecs' cleanup hitter, Colby Turner. With the count 1-2, Turner singled through the left side to score Montoya. Tino Bethancourt was hit by the first pitch that Miskelly threw. With the bases loaded, Josh Quezada grounded into a 4-6-3 double play as Wells came home.
With Jackson at the plate, a Miskelly wild pitch allowed Turner to score the third SDSU run of the inning. Jackson worked out a walk to keep the inning going. A pitch hit McCombs to put the go-ahead run on first. With Whittle coming to the plate, Owen Geiss entered for LBSU and struck him out to get out of the inning.
Hammond walked to begin the top of the seventh. He stole second before Russell struck out Newman Jr. for the first out. Collins popped out. Briseno hit a fly ball to left, which Jackson had to run to the shortstop area to catch for the final out of the frame.
Marinconz reached on an infield single against SDSU's fourth pitcher of the game, Evan Miranda. Miranda hit Champagne. Ty Borgogno attempted to sacrifice the runners up a base, but Miranda fielded the attempt cleanly and threw to third to retire Marinconz. Ashworth grounded out to second as both runners advanced a base. Lopez walked to load the bases. Hammond ground out to second to end the inning.
Jonathan Largaespada entered the game in the bottom of the eighth for the Dirtbags and retired the Aztecs in order.
Newman Jr. led off the ninth with a double down the left field line. Down 1-2 in the count, Collins tripled down the rightfield line to drive in Newman Jr. With one out, Marinconz singled up the middle to plate Collins for a 6-3 score.
Dirtbags' closer Mike Villani came on in the ninth and retired the side for his seventh save of the year.
The previous season high for LBSU in walks was nine, which was recorded against Washington on Feb. 18. Ashworth and Lopez walked three times. Marinconz charted three of the seven Dirtbags' hits (3-for-4) and drove in two runs.
