Borgogno Goes 2-for-4 With First Home Run Of The Season
LONG BEACH, Calif.— UC San Diego defeated Long Beach State 6-3 in the Big West baseball series finale for the teams Sunday afternoon at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
Ty Borgogno hit his first home run of the season with one out in the bottom of the first to break the seal for the Dirtbags. John Newman Jr. went from being down 0-2 in the count against Tritons' starter Matthew Dalquist to working out a walk.
Adrian Lopez doubled to the right-center gap to send Newman Jr. to third. Alex Champagne reached on an error as Newman Jr. scored the Dirtbags' second run. Champagne stole second with two outs to give Long Beach State two runners in scoring position. Justin Roulston flew out to right center to end the inning.
Doyle Kane opened the top of the second with a single. Dirtbags starter Nathen Morris got the next two outs before walking Anthony Potestio. Brock Kleszcz tied the game with a double to center that scored both runners. Noah Sudyka walked to turn the lineup over to Tritons' leadoff hitter Nick Costello.
With a staff day scheduled, Owen Geiss relieved Morris. Geiss hit Costello to load the bases. Michael Crossland's opposite-field single through the ride drove in two runs, giving UCSD a 4-2 advantage. Bradlee Preap grounded out to third for the final out.
Costello and Crossland recorded back-to-back singles to begin the top of the fifth. Preap's chopper to third was fielded by Borgogno who threw to first for the out as both runners moved up. With the infield in, Kane singled through the left side to drive in Costello. Geiss struck out Benjamin Rosengard for the second out. Grant Cherry relieved Geiss, facing Emiliano Gonzalez. Gonzalez flew out to right to complete the frame.
Kyle Ashworth hit his second home run of the weekend, an opposite-field blast with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 5-3.
Jonathan Largaespada entered to begin the eighth. He hit Gonzalez. Potestio successfully sacrificed Gonzalez to third with a bunt. The Dirtbags brought the infield in against Kleszcz who hit a shot to the backhand of Lopez at short. Lopez fielded the ball cleanly, held the runner at third, and threw on to first to get the second out. Sudyka ran the count to 3-2 before reaching on an infield single that scored Gonzalez. He stole second and third before Costello struck out on a 2-2 Largesapada breaking ball.
Izaak Gonzalez relieved Dalquist to begin the eighth. Nick Marinconz singled on a 3-2 count for the Dirtbags. Gonzalez induced a 4-6-3 double play from Ashworth before Borgogno doubled down the left field line. Newman Jr. flew out to left for the third out.
Dalquist improved to 5-0 on the year for the Tritons (21-8, 8-4 Big West). He retired eight LBSU batters in a row at point. Dalquist struck out seven, walked two, and allowed four hits. Martinez picked up his seventh save of the year with two scoreless innings. Crossland and Kane both posted two hits for the Tritons.
Borgogno went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Dirtbags.
On Tuesday night, Long Beach State (16-12-1, 5-7 Big West) travels to San Diego State (9-21). Coverage on the Mountain West Network begins at 6 p.m.
