Rhona Cook Selected Big West Women’s Tennis Player Of The Week

Senior Rhona Cook led the Beach to a 2-0 week with wins over Brown and Cal State Fullerton on her way to her first conference weekly award of the season
IRVINE, Calif. – Long Beach State senior Rhona Cook was named Big West Women's Tennis Player of the Week after leading the Beach to a pair of wins over Brown and conference rival Cal State Fullerton last week. The honor is the first of Cook's LBSU career.
Cook, who has played all her matches at the top flight this season, won both her singles and doubles competitions as she helped guide the Beach to a 2-0 week. She started the week against Brown, where she and partner Peppi Ramstedt grinded out a 6-4 doubles win, before Cook took down Ali Benedetto, 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1 singles to lead the Beach to a 4-3 victory.
Against Cal State Fullerton, the Chester, United Kingdom native played a crucial role in Long Beach State's 5-2 victory. After she and Ramstedt swept Josie Usereau and Sein Myoung, 6-0, Cook faced Usereau at the top flight in an exciting three-set battle that would prove to be the match-clincher. She rallied from a 6-5 deficit to win 7-6 in the first set, before Usereau forced a third set with a 6-0 win. With pressure mounting, Cook turned in a gritty performance and earned a hard-fought 6-2 win to clinch the match for Long Beach State.
With Cook leading the way, Long Beach State is 4-1 in Big West action and the Beach are riding a four-match winning streak. Cook has won her last five consecutive doubles and singles contests at flight one.
