Beach Claim Doubles Point but Drop Five Singles Matches in Road Setback
HONOLULU, Hawai'i -- No. 51 Long Beach State fell 5-2 at No. 45 Hawai'i on Saturday at the UH Tennis Complex, moving to 5-5 overall on the season and 2-1 in Big West play.
The Beach started strong, capturing the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Pamela Badillo and Thea Jagare battled to a 7-5 victory at No. 2, while Daisy Carpenter and Diana De Simone delivered a decisive 6-2 win at No. 3. Hawai'i took the top doubles court 6-3, but LBSU's pair of victories secured the early 1-0 lead.
In singles play, Hawai'i responded by claiming five of six matches to secure the team win. The Rainbow Wahine evened the score with straight-set victories at Nos. 2 and 3, as Makeilah Nepomuceno defeated De Simone 6-3, 6-1 and Emma Forgac topped Jagare 6-1, 7-5.
Grete Gull gave Hawai'i its first lead of the day with a three-set win over Cecilia Costa at the top spot, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. The Rainbow Wahine added to the margin at No. 5, where Hannah Galindo edged Badillo 7-5, 7-5, and clinched the match at No. 6 as Allaire Berl posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Carpenter.
Long Beach State's lone singles point came at No. 4, where Paulina Franco bounced back from a second-set tiebreak loss to defeat Sophie Rachor 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-1.
Despite taking the early doubles point, the Beach were unable to maintain momentum in singles as Hawai'i closed out the 5-2 decision.
