Doubleheader Split Gives Softball Series Win Over Hawai’i

4/27/2024 7:22:00 PM | Softball

Long Beach State has yet to lose a conference series with two weeks remaining in the regular season.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State's 3-1 win in the second game against Hawai'i closed out the team's seventh straight conference series win as the Beach split a doubleheader on Saturday at the LBSU Softball Complex.

Long Beach State (21-27, 16-5 Big West) came up with some clutch hitting late in the second game to secure the series win over Hawai'i (19-21, 12-7 Big West).

Sophia Fernandez had another strong outing, striking out four and allowing six hits with no walks and just one run to improve to 9-3 in Big West play while lowering her league ERA to 1.28.

The Beach took an early lead in the top of the first inning. Makayla Medellin reached on an error to start the game. Sara Olson followed with a single and after a groundout advanced both runners, a second grounder scored Medellin to put the Beach in front 1-0.

Hawai'i recovered in the second inning, tying the game after Haley Johnson hit a leadoff double and was pushed around to score with a pair of outs, including a sacrifice fly. After the second inning, Fernandez would only allow three more hits and the Beach were just waiting for their opportunity.

That moment came in the fifth inning for the Beach. Corissa Sweet drew a leadoff walk to start the inning, and after a groundout, Sara Olson doubled to put two runners in scoring position for Long Beach State. Senior Sinclair Lawhorn then came up with the clutch hit, a two-run double into the left center gap to score both and put the Beach in front 3-1.

In the opener, Long Beach State left 12 runners on as Key-Ann Campbell-Pua and the Rainbow Wahine danced around trouble with multiple baserunners in each inning with no runs scored, and finally Hawai'i made the Beach pay. The key moment of the game came in the sixth inning. With one runner on and one out, Long Beach State appeared to retire the lead runner on a fielder's choice, but after an official's conference, the play was overturned and the inning got away from the Beach. A walk loaded the bases, and while the Beach got the second out, they couldn't get the third before big damage was done with six unearned runs in the frame.

The Rainbow Wahine added two more in the top of the seventh to take an 8-0 win in the first game Saturday. Long Beach State were 2-1 winners in the first game of the series on Friday.

Long Beach State closes out their home schedule with a three-game series at the LBSU Softball Complex next week against Cal State Bakersfield. A Friday doubleheader on ESPN+ starting at 3:30 p.m. kicks off the series with the 'Runners, followed by senior day on May 4 at 1 p.m.
