The Beach scored 22 runs and allowed two hits over the first two games of the series.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – A late explosion of runs in game one and an early one in game two supplemented a pair of dominant pitching outings as Long Beach State crushed Cal State Bakersfield 10-0 and 12-0 to open their final home series of the year.
In the opening game, pitching carried the way early as Sophia Fernandez set down the first 11 batters she faced, while Sophia Geurra Leiva kept Long Beach State (23-27, 18-5 Big West) off the board for the first three innings.
That run would end in the fourth. Sara Olson drew a leadoff walk and scored after back-to-back singles from Makayla Medellin and Sinclair Lawhorn to put Long Beach State in front. A double from Jocylyn Vidal added one more, and then an RBI single from Carly Robbins put the Beach on top 3-0.
Medellin's third hit of the game in the fifth got the Beach going again, with a triple from Cassie Camou and a two-run home run from Vidal increasing the lead to 6-0. Olson and Jaeden Barajas reached to begin another rally in the sixth inning, and after an RBI single from Vidal, Savannah Magadan ended the game with flair, a three-run home run to left field to close out a 10-0 win in six innings.
After Kate Barnett set down Cal State Bakersfield (5-40, 3-20 Big West) in order to start the second game, Long Beach State effectively finished it in the bottom half.
Long Beach State started the inning with back-to-back singles from Jacquelyn Bickar and Sara Olson, and capitalized on great hitting, some suspect defense and advantageous base-running to open up a big lead.
Despite only one extra-base hit in the inning, Long Beach State sent 16 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored a season-high 12 runs in the inning, a total tied for the fourth-most in program history.
Up big, Long Beach State and the Runners quickly put up zeroes in the following innings as LBSU closed out the victory and their eighth series win in eight tries this season in Big West play.
Starting pitchers Fernandez and Barnett each allowed just one hit in their wins, while Mo Quinlan saw just one baserunner on a walk in 2.2 innings of relief.
Long Beach State will face the Runners one final time starting at 1 p.m. Saturday from the LBSU Softball Complex. The Beach will honor their nine seniors following the game.
