Michigan Edges The Dirtbags 7-5

4/27/2024 2:29:00 PM | Baseball

For the second consecutive day, the Wolverines score the winning runs in the bottom of the eighth.

ANN ARBOR, Mich.—For the second day in a row, Michigan scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth, and the Wolverines defeated Long Beach State 7-5 in game two of a weekend series Saturday afternoon at Ray Fisher Stadium.

John Newman Jr.'s two-out single in the top of the first scored Kyle Ashworth for the game's first run.

With two outs, Stephen Hrustich overcame an 0-2 Kellan Montgomery count to work out a walk. Collin Priest's base hit to right center gap that bounced off Alex Champagne's glove over the fence for a ground rule double. With runners on second and third, Joe Longo's shot went off Montgomery for an infield single as Hrustrich scored to tie the game.

Mack Timbrook singled through the right side to lead off the bottom of the second. Timbrook advanced to second on a Montgomery wild pitch. Kyle Dernedde doubled to the right center gap to score Timbrook. Armando Briseno fielded Brock Leitgeb's grounder at short. His throw was high, allowing Dernedde to score the third run. Montgomery struck out AJ Garcia to get the first out. With the count 1-1 on Bradley Navarro, Newman Jr. threw out Leitgeb attempting to steal.

Newman Jr.'s two-out single in the top of the third drove in Charpiot, bringing the score to 3-2 in favor of the Wolverines.

Longo reached on a two-out error in the bottom of the third. Cole Caruso battled Montgomery to a 12-pitch at-bat, culminating in a single to center for the Wolverines's third baseman. Longo reached third on the play. Montgomery induced a Timbrook grounder to second to end the frame. The Dirtbags stranded the tying run in scoring position in both the top of the fourth and in the top of the fifth.

Alfredo Velazquez singled through the left side to begin the bottom of the fifth. Hrustich's single to right advanced Velazquez to third. Priest singled through the right side to drive in Velazquez and send Hrustich to third. Longo fouled out. Collin Miskelly relieved Montgomery and got the second out. A Miskelly wild pitch pushed the runners up a base and created a 5-2 game. Timbrook grounded out to second for the final out.

With two outs in the top of the sixth, Bresino's ground-rule double advanced Adrian Lopez to third. Cole Santander doubled to center to drive in both runners and cut the lead to 5-4. Garcia walked with two outs in the bottom of the sixth; he stole second before Velazquez walked. Hrustich fouled out to first for the third out.

Newman Jr. led off the top of the eighth with an infield single. Lopez's sacrifice bunt advanced Newman Jr. to second. Michigan reliever Will Rogers struck out Champagne before Briesno singled up the middle to drive in Newman Jr. for the tying run.

Largespada hit Timbrook to begin the bottom of the eighth. Newman Jr. threw out Timbrook attempting to steal on a 3-0 count. At 3-1, Largaespada walked Dernedde. Leitgeb reached on an infield single to give Michigan runners on first and second. Garcia's bloop single to left center loaded the bases. Largaespada's first pitch to pinch-hitter Mitch Voit bounced to the backstop, scoring Dernedde. The Dirtbags brought the infield in against Voit, who walked to load the bases. Nathen Morris relieved Largaespada. Hrustich came to the plate and recorded a sac fly to center that scored the seventh run. Champagne appeared to have made a diving catch of a Priest liner. The umpires used instant replay to review the call and determined the out stood.

Jacob Denner, the current Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, who was the winner in game one, came onto close in the ninth. He retired the Dirtbags in order for his third save of the season.

Long Beach State outhit Michigan 12-9 for the second consecutive day. Briseno led the Dirtbags, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored. Newman Jr. was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Santander was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Priest was the lone Wolverines player with multiple hits, going 2-for-5.

Long Beach State (20-19-1) and Michigan (22-21) conclude the series Sunday. The first pitch on Big Ten+ is set for 10 a.m. PDT/1 p.m. PDT.
