Michigan Turns Away Dirtbags Ninth Inning Rally To Win 5-4

Briseno and Newman both post two hits for Long Beach State

ANN ARBOR, Mich.—Michigan turned away a furious ninth-inning Long Beach State rally to defeat the Dirtbags 5-4 in the baseball series finale Sunday afternoon at Ray Fisher Stadium.

Wolverines' starter Sachem Ramos walked Connor Charpiot and John Newman Jr. with two outs in the top of the first. Michigan right fielder Stephen Hrustich made a diving catch of an Armando Briseno liner to keep the Dirtbags at bay.

Hrustich opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when he hit his 10th home run of the season with two outs.

Kyle Ashworth walked to lead off the top of the third. Dylan Vigue relieved Ramos and struck out Ty Borgogno. Ashworth advanced to second on a 0-1 wild pitch to Charpiot. The Long Beach State left fielder grounded out to third as Ashworth remained at second. Vigue struck out Newman Jr. to quiet LBSU.

Ashworth charted Long Beach State's sixth walk of the game with two outs in the top of the fifth, but he was left on base when Vigue got a 1-3 ground out to finalize the frame.

Freshman Owen Geiss made his first start of the season for the Dirtbags. He retired eight in a row before giving up a Mack Timbrook single with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Kyle Dernedde doubled to left, sending Timbrook to third. A failed Long Beach State pickoff attempt on an AJ Garcia bunt attempt resulted in Timbrook scoring. Garcia walked.

With runners on the corners, Cooper Mullens, a lefthanded Michigan pinch-hitter, was announced. Long Beach State went to lefty Nick Williams to match the Wolverines. Mullens went for the safety squeeze. Williams fielded the ball and threw it home, but not in time, as the run came across. Hrustich singled to center, scoring Garcia. Mullens attempted to take third but was thrown out by Alex Champagne for the second out. Williams struck out Collin Priest to end the inning.

Newman Jr. doubled to right with one out in the top of the sixth. Briseno singled to left to drive in the first Long Beach State run. Champagne walked. With runners on first and second, Vigue struck out Jack Hammond and Cole Santander to end the inning.

Will Rogers homered off Jonathan Largaespada with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, increasing the lead back to four.

With one out in the top of the seventh, Ashworth walked for the third time to begin the top of the seventh. Borgogno's flare to rightfield moved Ashworth up a base. Ashworth stole third, and Borgogno headed to second. Charpiot grounded out to third, but the runners couldn't advance. Newman Jr. grounded out to short for the third out.

Grant Cherry relieved Largaespada to begin the bottom of the seventh. He retired the first two batters he faced before walking the next two Wolverines. Cherry struck out Joe Longo for the third out.

Briseno led off the eighth with his second hit of the game, an opposite field single to right. Champagne's grounder to first allowed Briseno to move to second. With two outs, Santander singled in Briseno.

Ashworth singled to lead off the top of the ninth. Borgogno was hit by the first pitch he saw from Vigue. Ricky Kidd relieved Vigue after six innings of work. Kidd went up 1-2 in the count on Charpiot before uncorking a wild pitch that advanced both runners. Charpiot singled through the left side to plate Ashworth. Justin Roulston ran for Charpiot as Newman Jr. came to the plate. The LBSU catcher singled to left to drive in Borgogno.

Briseno grounded into a 5-3 double play (a Division I leading 49th) as Newman Jr. made it to second. As Champagne came to bat, the Wolverines went to closer Jacob Denner in a lefty-lefty matchup. Champagne popped out to end the game.

For the third day in a row, the Dirtbags outhit the Wolverines, 9-7. Michigan (23-21) was led by Timbrook, who was 3-for-4. Briseno went 2-for-5 to pace the Dirtbags. In four games during the week, the sophomore infielder hit .647 (11-for-17). Newman was also 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Long Beach State (20-20-1, 7-11 Big West) resumes action next Friday when the Dirtbags travel to UC Davis (18-22, 5-12 Big West). ESPN+ covers the action beginning at 2:30 p.m.
