The Beach Win Twice On The Men's Side
Day 1 Results
IRVINE, Calif.—Three wins highlighted day one of the Steve Scott Invitational Friday at Anteater Stadium for the Long Beach State men's and women's track and field teams.
MEN
Daniel Palacio won the pole vault by clearing 16-5 1/4 on his second attempt. The Beach performed well in the event as Glen Quayle went 15-5 1/2 to earn third. Milo Orona cleared a season-best 14-5 1/2 in the pole vault to finish ninth.
Cristian Martinez led the Beach to a 1-2-3 finish in the invitational 800m. Martinez ran a career-best 1:50.19 to take top honors. Alex Kalmar was second (1:50.34), followed by Connor Phillips, third with a season-best of 1:50.95. Jay Brown added a sixth-place placing (1:52.94).
Antonio Carbajal was the runner-up in the 5000m, running 14:47.66.
The Beach excelled in the hammer throw. Pablo Gamez earned second with a season-best 201-3. Micah Norfles was third at 199-9, while Canaan Wharry finished sixth (184-7). Tyler Knowles (165-6) and Mark Lutke (132-9) also turned in a season-best in the hammer prelims. The hammer throw was won by former Long Beach State conference champion and current volunteer assistant coach Sebastian Coleman (213-5).
Elijah Harris was third in the long jump (24-3 1/2), with Milo Orona posting a career-best 24-0 1/4 to give him a sixth-place showing.
Quinn Garity finished fourth in the invitational mile (4:09.91). Mario Tavares was sixth in the invitational mile (4:10.47).
Kyle Reden made his season debut in the 3000m steeplechase, running 9:43.48 to finish eighth.
WOMEN
Giszelle Hrehor tossed the hammer 182-6 on the day's first attempt, and that performance won the event for the sophomore from Buellton, Calif. She took home the victory by 4.5 inches over UCI's Deandra Tyler.
Hailey Fune' posted a leap of 19-8 1/4 to place fifth in the long jump.
Alyssa Tapanes and Jadyn Palaschuk were sixth (18:13.32) and seventh, respectively (18:14.13) in the open 5000m. Palaschuk's 18:14.13 was a season-best time.
Keeley Rasmussen finished seventh in the hammer (161-3), while Faitalia Ah-Fook was eighth (156-1).

The Steve Scott Invitational concludes on Saturday. Field events get underway at 11 a.m., while track competition begins at 12:30 p.m.
