Newman Jr. Hits Two Home Runs For Long Beach State
Kurt Barr retired the first seven Dirtbags he faced before issuing a one-out walk to Cole Santander in the top of the third. Jack Hammond doubled to the opposite field in right center to advance Santander to third. Santander was off on a 1-0 pitch to Ty Borgogno, who was grounded too short. Kyle Dernedde threw home to catch Santander for the second out. Kyle Ashworth lined out to Dernedde to end the inning.
Mack Timbrook recorded the first hit off Myles Patton, a double down the right field line to begin the bottom of the third. Patton's first pitch hit Dernedde. AJ Garcia attempted to bunt the runners over, but his effort was fielded by LBSU catcher John Newman Jr., who threw to Borgogno at third to get the lead runners. Mitch Voit's chopper to Hammond allowed both runners to move up a base. Stephen Hrustich walked to load the bases.
With the count 2-2 to Joe Longo, Michigan's cleanup hitter, a Patton breaking ball went to the backstop, allowing all the runners to move up and give the Wolverines the lead. Longo walked to load the bases for a second time. Dylan Stanton was hit by the first Patton pitch he saw, making it 2-0 in favor of the Wolverines. Patton struck out Cole Caruso to complete matters.
Newman Jr. got the Dirtbags on the board with one out in the top of the fourth when he hit his seventh home run. Alex Champagne followed with a single up the middle. Armando Briseno walked to bring up Cole Santander who singled up the middle to tie the game with a single. Hammond provided the Dirtbags the lead with a single up the middle to make it 3-2.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, the Wolverines recorded back-to-back singles. A Patton pitch hit Stanton to load the bases. Caruso grounded out to third to keep the score 3-2.
Champagne walked with one out in the top of the sixth. With the count 0-1 to Briseno, a passed ball allowed Champagne to move to second. Briseno grounded out to second as Champagne took third. Santander grounded out to third to end the inning.
Ricky Kidd relieved Barr to begin the seventh and walked Hammond on five pitches. Borgogno singled through the left side to send Hammond to second. Ashworth grounded into the 47th Michigan double play of the season (the NCAA Division I high) as Hammond advanced to third. Lopez grounded out to short for the final out.
Patton retired six in a row before walking Hrustich with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Longo homered to left center to return the lead to the Wolverines 4-3.
Newman Jr. became the first Dirtbags player to hit two home runs in a game since Connor Burns did it against UC Santa Barbara on May 14, 2023, when his opposite field blast tied the game with one out in the top of the eighth. Champagne singled. Michigan went to the bullpen as Jacob Denner came on to face Briseno. The Long Beach State second baseman doubled to the right center gap, sending Champagne to third. Santander was intentionally walked to load the bases. Hammond's flare to right scored the tying run before Ashworth's two-RBI single created a 7-4 game.
Caruso reached an error to begin the bottom of the eighth. Pinch-hitter Cooper Mullens worked out a walk off LBSU reliever Grant Cherry. A pitch hit Timbrook to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Collin Priest came to the plate. The Dirtbags went to Nick Williams for a lefty-lefty matchup. Priest popped out to short for the first out.
Pinch-hitter Bradley Navarro's bouncer through the left side scored two runs. Voit reached on a fielder's choice that loaded the bases. Hrustich singled through the left side to drive in two runs, putting the Wolverines ahead again, 8-7. Longo singled to center to drive in the ninth Michigan run. A Williams pitch hit pinch-hitter Alfredo Velazquez to load the bases. Caruso hit his third grand slam of the year for a 13-7 score. Nathen Morris relieved Williams, striking out pinch-hitter Joosung Park. Timbrook singled through the left side. Pinch-hitter Brock Leitgeb reached on the third error of the inning as the 10th of the inning and 14th run of the game scored. Mason Dillow made his first appearance of the season on the hill for Long Beach State in relief of Morris. Jonathan Kim reached on an infield single. Pinch-hitter Ian Kennedy struck out to end the inning.
Long Beach State outhit Michigan 11-10 and struck out nine Wolverines. Hammond was 3-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Dirtbags. Newman and Champagne both had two hits. Connor Charpiot went 0-5 to end his 16-game hitting streak and end his streak of reaching base at 30. Longo led the Wolverines as he was 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Long Beach State (20-18-1) and Michigan (21-21) continue the series on Saturday. The first pitch on Big Ten+ is set for 11 a.m. PDT/2 p.m. PDT.
