Long Beach State's 13 Hits Leads Dirtbags Past UCR 13-1

Armando Briseno and Cole Santander Each Record Three Hits

LONG BEACH, Calif.—Long Beach State recorded 13 hits Friday night as the Dirtbags defeated UC Riverside 13-1 in the Big West baseball series opener at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.

The Dirtbags took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a Cole Santander RBI single that scored Kyle Ashworth.

John Newman Jr. extended the lead with his sixth home run of the season with one out in the bottom of the third.

After getting a grounder to start the game, Long Beach State starter Myles Patton struck out five consecutive Highlanders, four looking. With one out in the top of the fourth, Patton walked Cole Koniarsky. Bubba Rocha doubled to left before Tyler Weaver popped out to second. Patton struck out Jayden Lopez, his seventh, to end the inning.

Armando Briseno singled up the middle to lead off the bottom of the fourth. An Alfredo Capacete II wild pitch moved to Briseno to second. He went to third on a Nick Marinconz sacrifice bunt. UC Riverside brought the infield in against Jack Hammond. The LBSU first baseman singled past the defense to make it 3-0.

Rudy Rodriguez IV worked out a one-out walk against Patton in the top of the fifth. He advanced to second on a Nick Poss grounder. Patton walked Anthony Mata and Zachary Chamizo back-to-back to load the bases. Koniarsky reached on an error to score Rodriguez IV. Rocha flew out to Ashworth on the right field line to conclude the inning.

Newman walked with one out in the bottom of the fifth. He stole second and, with two outs, scored on Adrian Lopez's seventh home run of the season. Tucker Juline relieved Capacete II. Alex Champagne singled up the middle. Briseno followed with a double to left center gap to score Champagne.

Hammond led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk. With one out, Connor Charpiot was hit by a Juline pitch. The Dirtbags attempted a double steal with the count of 2-0 on Newman Jr. Poss, the UCR catcher, threw out Hammond at third as Charpiot took second.  Newman Jr. walked to bring up Santander. The designated hitter's opposite field single to right scored Charpiot.

Patton struck out 10, marking the third time this year he struck out at least 10 in a game. He walked four through six innings before being lifted in favor of Nathen Morris to begin the seventh.

Champagne reached on an error to begin the bottom of the seventh. He stole his team-leading 14th base. Briseno was hit by a Fareed Ahmend (the third pitcher of the game for UCR) pitch.  Hit a grounder to Chamizo at third. He threw to Tyler Weaver at second for an out. Weaver attempted to complete the double play with a throw to first. His attempt was high and ended up in the UC Riverside dugout, allowing Champagne to score. Hammond walked for the second time to give LBSU runners at first and second. Ashworth flew out to right, but Marinconz was able to advance to third. Hammond stole second before Ahmend struck out Charpiot to end the inning.

Koniarsky singled to begin the eighth. Morris retired the next two UCR batters before pinch hitter Sean Blandino reached on an error. Mason Grace hit a grounder back to Morris on the hill, and he threw onto first for the third out.

The first six Long Beach State batters reached base in the bottom of the eighth. The Dirtbags batted around and scored five runs, highlighted by a Briseno grand slam home run.

Friday's 13 runs marked the first time since 2009 that Long Beach State has scored at least 10 times in three consecutive games. Briseno led the way for LBSU, going 3-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored. Santander went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Hammond was 2-for-3 with two walks and an RBI. Newman was 1-of-2 with three walks and three runs scored.

Collin Miskelly pitched a scoreless ninth to complete a four-hitter. The trio of Long Beach State pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts.

The Dirtbags honored its 1989 club that made the College World Series for the first time before the first pitch, with the team's head coach, Dave Snow, throwing out the first pitch. Long Beach State (20-14-1, 7-9 Big West) and UC Riverside (10-22, 1-12 Big West) continue the series Saturday night. Coverage on ESPN+ begins at 6 p.m.
