Charpiot and Briseno Record Two Hits For Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif.—UC Riverside evened its Big West series against Long Beach State Saturday night as the Highlanders defeated the Dirtbags 8-6 at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.

The Dirtbags recorded a hit with two outs in the first three innings. With Ty Borgogno on first after his single in the third, Connor Charpiot doubled to the right-center gap to drive in the first run of the game.

Zachary Chamizo singled to lead off the top of the fourth. With one out, Dominic Martinez reached on an infield single that went off the foot of Dirtbags pitcher Kellan Montgomery. Bubba Rocha singled through the left side to score Chamizo. Both runners advanced a base on the throw from Charpiot in left. Montgomery struck out Jayden Lopez before Sean Blandino grounded out to second to end the inning.

Alex Champagne reached on an error with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. He went to second on a Nick Poss passed ball. Armando Briseno's double scored Champagne, returning the lead to Long Beach State 2-1.

Andrew Rivas singled to lead off the fifth. He advanced to second on a Poss sac bunt. Poss reached on an error on the play, resulting in runners on first and second for UCR. Anthony Mata's sacrifice advanced the runners up a base. Chamizo put UC Riverside into the lead for the first time on the weekend with a double to the left-center gap, scoring both runners. Chamizo overran the base at second and was thrown out in a rundown 7-6-4-5. Cole Koniarsky beat the LBSU shift with a single through the right side. Nick Marinconz made a fine play at second, throwing out Martinez to wrap up the frame by a step.

Matthew Flores, the UCR starter, appeared to be injured before the start of the bottom of the fifth. He stayed in after a series of warmups but hit Borgogno on a 1-2 count. With the count 1-0 to Charpiot, Borgogno stole second. Charpiot walked. On Flores' first pitch to John Newman Jr., Borgogno and Charpiot executed a successful double steal. Newman Jr. hit a fly ball to mid-right field. Koniarsky caught it; his throw home was cut off as Borgogno scored to tie the game.

Blandino beat the Long Beach State shift with a two-out single to left in the top of the sixth. Rivas doubled down the right field line to send Blandino to third. Poss singled to right to drive in both runners for a 5-3 score. Poss took second on the play. Montgomery was relieved by Grant Cherry, who got Mata to ground out to short and end the inning.

James Appleford relieved Flores to begin the bottom of the sixth. With one out, he walked Champagne. Champagne moved to second when Appleford's throw on a pickoff attempt went high. Champagne stole third, his team-high 15th swipe of the season. Briseno walked. With the count 1-1 on Marinconz, an Appleford wild pitch advanced both runners up a base, creating a 5-4 score. With the count 3-1, Tyler Gebb relieved Appleford. Gebb hit Kyle Ashworth to load the base. Borgogno's sac fly to center scored Briseno. Charpiot ran the count to 3-2 before Gebb struck him out, looking to end the inning.

Lopez doubled to left to lead off the top of the eighth. Tyler Martinez ran for Lopez as Blandino came to the plate. Blandino's bunt was put between the pitcher's mound and short, resulting in a hit. Rivas came up with runners at the corners. He reached on an error, allowing Lopez to score. Poss' sacrifice bunt moved the runners up a base. Jonathan Largaespada relieved Cherry with one out, facing Mata. Ashworth caught Mata's fly ball for a sac fly. With one run, Ashworth threw to third to try and get pinch-runner Tyler Weaver. His throw ended up in the LBSU dugout, scoring the eighth run for the Highlanders.

Briseno singled up the middle to start the bottom of the eighth. Marinconz singled to left, advancing Briseno to second. A Gebb wild pitch allowed both runners to move up. Ashworth walked to load the bases. Borgogno flew out to center, but Marinconz was doubled off the second Briseno scored. Charpiot flew out to the left for the third out.

Koniarsky walked to lead off the top of the ninth. Jacob Badawi ran for Koniarsky as Martinez came to bat. The Highlanders' second baseman singled up the middle. The runners went to second and third on a passed ball. Largaespada struck out Rocha and Martinez before intentionally walking Blandino. Zach Tallerman struck out, but Newman Jr.'s second passed ball of the game allowed each runner to reach safely. A Largaespada wild pitch allowed the runners to move up again and make it 10-6 in favor of UCR. Largaespada became the first Long Beach State pitcher to strike out four in an inning since Charlie Ruiz did it against Washington State on Mar. 14, 2009, when Poss went down swinging.

Newman Jr. reached on a two-base error by Rocha, the left fielder, to begin the bottom of the ninth. Gebb retired the next three Long Beach State batters in a row to pick up his third win of the season.

Chamizo went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI to lead UC Riverside. Martinez was also 3-for-5. UC Riverside broke a 21-game losing streak in the series, dating back to Apr. 23, 2016. The victory was the first for the Highlanders in Long Beach since Apr. 17, 2015, when UCR defeated LBSU 3-2. Charpiot and Briesno each recorded two hits for the Dirtbags. Briseno added to his RBI with two runs scored. Borgogno scored twice and drove in two runs.

Long Beach State (20-15-1, 7-10 Big West) and UC Riverside (11-22, 2-12 Big West) conclude the series Sunday afternoon. Coverage on ESPN+ begins at 1 p.m.
