Long Beach State wins their fourth Big West Championship and secures a fifth trip as a team to the NCAA postseason.
LAS VEGAS – Long Beach State closed out a dominant performance at the Big West Championship on Tuesday, running away with the championship by a 23-stroke margin with a fantastic final day to claim the title, the fourth team championship victory for Long Beach State.
Sophomore Jasmine Leovao was the repeat winner of the event for Long Beach State, securing the individual championship with a final round 74 to finish with the championship 4-under par, the only score under par for the tournament.
In the process, Leovao is the fourth golfer to repeat as the individual Big West Champion and the first since Beth Allen of CSUN in 2003 and 2004 20 years ago. Leovao is the sixth individual medalist to come from Long Beach State.
Freshman Andee Avery had an incredible day, finishing the tournament with her best round of the season in a 5-under par 67, helping Long Beach State pull away from the field on the final day, 11 strokes better on Tuesday than their nearest rivals, Cal Poly. Avery had six birdies and just one bogey in a tremendous final day, climbing up into a podium position in a tie for third place overall at 219 (+2). Avery's 67 was the low round of the tournament.
Avery shared that spot with Janae Leovao who also had a final day 74 to close the tournament at 219. Sophomore Madison Le was also under par on Tuesday, closing the tournament with a final round 70 to move up into the Top 10 as the Beach had four golfers in the top 8 positions.
Senior Angelina Kim closed out her time at the Big West championship with the team's third 74, as the Beach closed out the championship in style, pulling away from their competition after leading wire-to-wire as a team. The Beach was four strokes in front of Cal State Fullerton Tuesday for the best score of the tournament, a team round of 285 (-3).
With the victory, Long Beach State guarantees their spot in the NCAA postseason field, and will find out their Regional location during the NCAA selection show which will be held on Wednesday, April 24 at 11 a.m. PT on the Golf Channel.
