Softball Wins Another Walkoff In Extra Innings Against Toledo

The Beach kicked off the Louisville Slugger Invitational with a win Wednesday morning.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – An RBI single from Carly Robbins in the bottom of the eighth inning capped a 2-1 victory for Long Beach State over Toledo in support of an outstanding complete game performance from Sophia Fernandez in the circle.
Fernandez pitched a career-high eight innings and allowed just six hits and one run in a complete game, keeping Toledo (7-7) off balance through most of the contest and recording her third win of the season for Long Beach State (4-17).
Long Beach State left nine on base as Sophia Knight worked through a pair of early jams for Toledo, including the Beach having the bases loaded in the second inning. The Rockets then took the first lead of the game in the third inning as Lexi Eckman tripled to start the frame, and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Eli Enriquez. A great relay helped the Beach get out of the inning, cutting down a crucial run at the plate to keep the score 1-0.
Long Beach State broke onto the scoreboard in the fifth inning in a similar fashion. Jacquelyn Bickar smashed a ball into right that was misplayed, giving the Beach a runner on third that came home on a sac fly to center by Makayla Medellin. Both teams worked around runners in scoring position in the sixth, and moved into extra innings square at 1-1.
With the tiebreaker rule in effect, Long Beach State got a crucial out on a groundout to Selena Perez, and the Beach kept the Rockets' go ahead runner at third in the top of the eighth. Then in the bottom half, a single from Carly Robbins easily scored Medellin from second as the Beach came away with their second walkoff victory in as many games at the LBSU Softball Complex.
The Louisville Slugger Invitational continues with eight games at the LBSU Softball Complex on Friday and Saturday, including three for Long Beach State beginning with San Diego State to cap a busy Friday at the field. The tournament concludes with a Noon start Sunday as the Beach hosts Utah State on ESPN+.
