Softball Takes First Home Loss In 2024 Against San Diego State

The Aztecs jumped out to a big lead and held on despite solid relief from freshman Kate Barnett.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – San Diego State scored four runs in the first inning and never relinquished the lead on Friday night as Long Beach State continued the Louisville Slugger Invitational.
San Diego State (11-10) took an early lead after capitalizing on some early wildness from Beach starter Mo Quinlan. Three walks and a wild pitch scored a run and left two on, and then AJ Murphy came up with the big hit of the inning, a two-run double that made the score 3-0. An RBI single from Macey Keester added one more and the Aztecs led 4-0 before the Beach came to the plate.
Kate Barnett entered in relief at that point for Long Beach State (4-18) and finished off the game, extending her team lead in innings pitched, allowing three runs over 6.0 innings.
San Diego State added some insurance with a second two-run double, this time coming in the third off of the back of Cali Decker.
The Beach struck back in the bottom half of the third. Sara Olson tripled for the 11th time in her Long Beach State career, and promptly scored on a sacrifice fly from Jacquelyn Bickar. Cassidy West earned a three-inning save for SDSU, holding the Beach to just one additional hit in the final three innings while the Aztecs added one additional run in the top of the sixth.
The Louisville Slugger Invitational returns to the LBSU Softball Complex on Saturday, March 9 with three more games. Grand Canyon will face Princeton at 10 a.m., before the Beach will play both later in the day. Long Beach State starts with Princeton at 12:30 p.m. before wrapping the day against Grand Canyon at 3 p.m. All three games will feature live stats at www.beachlivestats.com.
